that could be reasonably desired that she was indeed "born again," and made the subject of regenerating grace. Her affections were "set on things above, and not on things on the earth;" and "when Christ who is her life shall appear, then shall she also appear with Him in glory! That glory!—that exceeding, and eternal weight of glory,—on the contemplation of which she so delighted to dwell and upon the possession of which she has now entered!

While therefore I can think with pleasure upon the day of her natural birth, regarding it as the forerunner of her spiritual birth, ought I not to think with higher satisfaction on her birthday for eternity-upon the day, which put an everlasting period to all her sins, and sorrows and temptations-upon the day she so much longed for, and which she with such patient, yet ardent hope, anticipated? Methinks I hear her say. "If ye loved me, ye would rejoice because I am with my Father." Yes my beloved, my sainted Mary Anne, I do rejoice in the persuasion that thou art where thou wouldst be-" for ever with the Lord." I do rejoice, that thou art delivered

from the burden of the flesh, and art in joy and felicity. I do rejoice in thy happiness. "Think not I envy thee thy crown,

No, if I could, I would not bring thee down."

Such a selfish desire, I can say, has never had place in my breast.

"Thou art not lost but only gone before;" gone to my Father's house, where there are many mansions," and one I would humbly hope, thro' unspeakable mercy and redeeming love, prepared for me! Soon shall we meet, never, never more to separate and my heart feels already attuned to that sublime ascription of praise, which thou, when on earth, didst anticipate with so much holy delight; and is ready to join with thee and the angelick choir, in that celestial anthem, and to say, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing: For thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood."

"Lord I believe thou hast prepar'd,
Unworthy tho' I be,

For me a blood-bought free reward,
A golden harp for me!"

NOVEMBER 21.

This day four years, my ever dear Mary Anne entered into life everlasting; it was her birthday for eternity! the day which put an end to her sins, and cares, and sorrows! The day which ended the minority of this heir of glory, and admitted her to the full possession of an "inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away." "Bless the Lord O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name," for his unspeakable goodness to her, and that he has taken her to hinself," to a weight of glory, which eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man to conceive."

O! how poor and faint are our conceptions of the state of the blessed. Negatives are the only terms we can employ, when we would attempt to speak upon the subject. What it is not, we know; but what it is, we must wait to know till that happy period, when we shall through mercy, be admitted to participate of their joys. And being assured by the word of truth, "that the

sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed:" O! may I be enabled to "lay aside every weight," and to run with patience the race set before me, looking unto Jesus, that being "faithful unto death," I may receive that " crown of life ;" and be where my beloved sister is, "to behold his glory."

OCTOBER 9, 1815.

This is my ever dear Mary Anne's birthday; and I do think that I never before experienced such pure, unmixed joy on any of the former returns of this day, as I have done since it pleased the Lord to take this dear creature to himself, and number her with his saints in glory everlasting! I can now, with confidence, call it a good day' a day, for which it becomes me to render "humble and hearty thanks to Almighty God;" who, to that natural birth of which this is the anniversary, and which was, to all her relatives and friends a source of much enjoyment, was pleased to add the unspeakable blessing of a

"new-birth unto righteousness," whereby she who was by nature "born in sin," and a "child of wrath, was made a member of Christ, a child of God, and an inheritor of the kingdom of heaven." For "if a child, then an heir," an " heir of God, and joint heir with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together." Amazing words! The former part of them her happy spirit is now released from, for "her warfare is accomplished, her iniquity is pardoned !" But the latter will know no termination. It is the purchase of her Redeemer's death; a fruit "of the travail of his soul;" the consequence of his intercession, whom "the Father heareth always."—" Father I will" (said the interceding Saviour) "that those whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am, that they may behold my glory." This prayer hath prevailed on her behalf, and she is "landed safe on Canaan's side." Her race was soon runher meetness for "the inheritance of the saints in light," soon gained; but her blessedness shall be eternal; in what this blessedness consists, we are much in the dark. It is shadowed forth
