T is rare, in these latter days of the | our political leaders are men of doubtful

ity in public life. It has come to be almost a settled maxim that it is impossible to be at once a politician and a Christian. The truth must be told; religious men, generally, refuse to enter the arena of political strife, from fear of its unholy and poisonous atmosphere. Many, if not most, of VOL. XI.-1

The high places of honor and profit are too often the rewards, not of public service, not of virtuous life, not even of intellectual capacity and industry, but of labors for the behoof of a political party, or of intrigues for the benefit of some sordid clique.
