The great renown of Solomon for wisdom; for the splendour and majesty of his throne and government; and for the incomparable works which he left behind him-seems to have led the ancient Syrians to believe that he was something more than mortal. So that after his death his splendid palaces were turned into Idol Temples, in which he was worshipped as the Sun, or Apollo, with rays of light round his head and called the God of wisdom, eloquence, poetry, &c.

In submitting these brief remarks, Sir, to the consideration of yourself and the learned society over which you preside, I beg respectfully to add, that the object I have had principally in view, has been to render justice to the first great masters in the most important arts of civilization; or rather, to promote a serious enquiry— whether it be more rational to believe, that these benefits have been derived from the "first author of beauty," as He is termed in the book of wisdom,-or from the idolatrous Greeks and Romans? A more extensive collection of the inscriptions still remaining among these unequalled ruins, might greatly assist us in our enquiries.

Further Remarks.

17. S. Since the preceding remarks came out of the press, I have had a book sent to me, the sub. ject of which purports to be, a translation of the Pal. myrene Inscriptions into English. Although the view: of the author, who is a learned Hebrician, are totally different from my own on this particular subject; it is not my intention to criticise his work; because : if I were to do so, it would answer no beneficial pur= pose : I. therefore preser submitting the following par. ticulars, which, I believe, give a complete demonstration of the general accuracy of my preceding remarks on this difficult undertaking) These extracts will. I humbly presume, discover both the Alphabet and the Language in which the Inscriptions ar N.3, firshline JVE 4248 HZ

The meaning of which is, month, Elub, year: this gives us nine letters of the twenty two, namely,

which mean, Julius Aurelius Zabdila, the son of Malchu, the son of Malchu Nassum. We have here six additional letters, namely, J. D. J., T. 2. In the Greek inscription, which was copied from the same marble, are the words,

this has been obliterated; and the Greek on the same Stone enables me to supply the defect, namely 25 (77); it will then stand this is an iss Crispinus, duke, or governor. The Greek is nearly of the same import, namely, KPICHEINOY TOY HTHCAMENOY We have now two more letters of the Alphabet, and a 7. (D), of another form of which there is another instance in the 13th inscription, where the month Nisan is written N.4 commences with

which, I suppose may be read. To the blessed name; the Eternal, ( or for ever) good and. I good and merciful.

In taking the Copies, Mr Wood has not distinguished between the I and the .... N:18,9,10, commence with, Septimius Orodes, most excellent Procurator (DVD) of Overseer & The name of the City 7 25575, Tadmus. I think, appears in the third line of the fifth inscription.

The plate containing three, only, of the inscriptions, to which reference is made in page 18, is now. w left out; instead of which I have put my readers in possession of exact Copies of the whole of the thirteen. The letter & which I supposed to be I, I, now find to be. This alteration will, in some degree, affect the interpretation which I have given in page 19 of Nos 11 & 12! I do not, suppose, that any of these ancient memorials contain matter of very considerable importance: but I have reason to believe, in reference to future discoveries, that
