MORAL AND RELIGIOUS CULTURE,

ARE RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED;

JOSEPH MACARDY.

The following pages constitute the present editor's "Introduction" to Dr. Stanhope's translation of Bishop Andrews' “PRIVATE PRAYERS for EVERY DAY in the week." The several articles are distinct; still the series may be read as one connected subject, with sectional divisions.

Revelation is introduced in sect. 1; a Revelation which, in the words of Bishop Horne, "is holy in its precepts, just in its laws, gracious in its promises, significant in its institutions, true in its narrations, and infallible in its predictions." Sect. 2, demonstrates that this Revelation is divine, and cannot be disregarded with impunity. That the control of the great Moral Governor is manifest in the punishment, and dispersion, of the Jews, is incontestible; and surely it is equally obvious in a neighbouring kingdom -in the blood-saturated soil of IDOLATROUS and INFIDEL France!

Idolatrous France has been styled the land of martyrs; and the Capets the scourge of the faithful. A slaughtered million of the Waldenses and Albigenses; the victims of the seven days' massacre

of Bartholomew; and the torture and spoliation, which were licensed and enacted by the revocation of the edict of Nantes,-were all before the throne of JEHOVAH ;-witnessing against the deliberate perpetrations of a foul, insatiate Idolatry. The cup was full-the angel of destruction commissioned-his satellites sent forthand a base, earth born philosophy, the retributive Scourge.

Sect. 3. reveals the goodness of GOD in mercifully chastening us with adversity and affliction. 4, Mortality; 5, Mortality in Sin; and 6, the Value of the Soul.

The Omniscience of GOD; self-examination; and wealth, power, and prosperity,—sect. 7—10. Slander, sect. 11; Persecution, 12; and Retirement, 13. GOD in every thing 14; and GOD with us, 15.

SCRIPTURE EVIDENCE (sect. 16.) in the words of Pascal " THE NOBLEST EVIDENCE OF our lord," may be read as a continuation of sect. 2; it is also an introduction to the Advent, Death, Resurrection, and Character, of Christ, sect. 17-20.

The character of the Redeemer is followed by that of His Dispensation; of a dispensation
