One bright celestial ray dart down,
And cheer thy sons beneath.

2 While in thy Word we search for Thee,
(We search with trembling awe,)
Open our eyes, and let us see
The wonders of thy law.

3 Now let our darkness comprehend
The light that shines so clear;
Now the revealing Spirit send,
And give us ears to hear.

224.

For success to the Gospel.

1 JESUS, the word of mercy give,
And let it swiftly run;

And let the priests themselves believe,
And put salvation on.

2 Clothed with the Spirit of holiness,
May all thy people prove
The plenitude of Gospel-grace,
The joy of perfect love.

3 Jesus, let all thy lovers shine,
Illustrious as the sun;

And, bright with borrow'd rays divine,
Their glorious circuit run.

4 Beyond the reach of mortals, spread
Their light, where'er they go;
And heavenly influences shed
On all the world below.

5 As giants may they run their race,
Exulting in their might;

As burning luminaries, chase
The gloom of hellish night.

6 As the bright Sun of Righteousness,
Their healing wings display;

And let their lustre still increase,
Unto the perfect day.

225.

Christ crucified and glorified.
1 HAIL, Thou once despised Jesus!
Hail, Thou Galilean king!
Thou didst suffer, to release us;
Thou didst free salvation bring!
Hail, Thou agonizing Saviour,
Bearer of our sin and shame!
By thy merits we find favour,
Life is given, through thy name.
2 Paschal Lamb, by God appointed,
All our sins on Thee were laid;
By almighty love anointed,

Thou hast full atonement made.
All thy people are forgiven,

Through the virtue of thy blood;
Opened is the gate of heaven;

Peace is made 'twixt man and God.

3 Jesus, hail, enthroned in glory,
There for ever to abide!

All the heavenly hosts adore Thee,
Seated at thy Father's side:
There for sinners Thou art pleading,
There Thou dost our place prepare;
Ever for us interceding,

Till in glory we appear.

4 Worship, honour, power, and blessing,
Thou art worthy to receive;
Loudest praises, without ceasing,
Meet it is for us to give :

Help, ye bright angelic spirits!

Bring your sweetest, noblest lays; Help to sing our Saviour's merits, Help to chant Immanuel's praise. 226.

Christ the deliverer of his people. 1 COME, Thou long-expected Jesus, Born to set thy people free;

From our fears and sins release us,
Let us find our rest in Thee:
Israel's strength and consolation,
Hope of all the earth Thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

2 Born thy people to deliver;
Born a child, and yet a King;
Born to reign in us for ever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring:
By thine own eternal Spirit,
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.
227.

The name of Jesus.

1 THOU dear Redeemer, dying Lamb!
We love to hear of Thee;
No music like thy charming name,
Nor half so sweet can be:
O may we ever hear thy voice!

In mercy to us speak!

And in our Priest will we rejoice,
Thou great Melchizedek !

2 Our Jesus shall be still our theme,
While in this world we stay;
We'll sing our Jesus' lovely name,
When all things else decay.
When we appear in yonder cloud,

With all his favour'd throng,

Then will we sing more sweet, more loud,
And Christ shall be our song.

228.

Christ victorious.

1 GIRD on thy conquering sword,
Ascend thy shining car;

And march, Almighty Lord,
To wage thy holy war:

Before his wheels,
In glad surprise,
Ye valleys rise,
And sink ye hills.

2 Before thine awful face
Millions of foes shall fall,
The captives of thy grace,
That grace, which conquers all:
The world shall know,
Great King of kings,
What wondrous things
Thine arm can do.

3 Here to my waiting soul,
Bend thy triumphant way;
Here every foe control,
And all thy power display.

My heart, thy throne,
Blest Jesus see,
Submit to Thee,

To Thee alone.

229..

Jehovah Jesus.

[ocr errors]

1 My song shall bless the Lord of all,
My praise shall climb to his abode;
Thee, Saviour, by that name I call,
The great Supreme, the mighty God.
2 Without beginning or decline,
Object of faith, and not of sense;
Eternal ages saw Him shine,
He shines eternal ages hence.
3 As much when in the manger laid,
Almighty Ruler of the sky,

As when the six days' work He made
Fill'd all the morning stars with joy.

4 Of all the crowns Jehovah bears,
Salvation is his dearest claim:

That gracious sound well-pleased He hears,
And owns Emmanuel for his name.

5 A cheerful confidence I feel,

My well-placed hopes with joy I see:
My bosom glows with heavenly zeal
To worship Him who died for me.
6 As man He pities my complaint,
His power and truth are all divine;
He will not fail, He cannot faint,
Salvation's sure, and must be mine.
230.

Christ the Lord of all.

1 ALL hail the power of Jesus' name!
Let angels prostrate fall:

Bring forth the royal diadem,
To crown Him Lord of all.

2 Crown Him, ye martyrs of your God,
Who from His altar call;

Extol the stem of Jesse's rod,
And crown Him Lord of all.

3 Ye chosen seed of Israel's race,
A remnant weak and small;
Hail Him who saves you by his grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

4 Ye Gentile sinners, ne'er forget
The wormwood and the gall;
Go, spread your trophies at his feet,
And crown Him Lord of all.

5 Let every kindred, every tribe
On this terrestrial ball,

To Him all majesty ascribe,
And crown Him Lord of all.

6 O that with yonder sacred throng,
We at his feet may fall;
There join the everlasting song,
And crown Him Lord of all!
