'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,
Let angel-minds inquire no more.
3 He left his Father's throne above,
(So free, so infinite, his grace!)
Emptied Himself of all but love,
And bled for Adam's helpless race:
'Tis mercy all, immense and free,
For, O my God, it found out me!
4 Long my imprison'd spirit lay,

Fast bound in sin and nature's night:
Thine eye diffused a quickening ray-
I woke the dungeon flamed with light;
My chains fell off, my heart was free;
I rose, went forth, and follow'd Thee.
5 No condemnation now I dread,
Jesus, and all in Him, is mine:
Alive in Him, my living Head,
And clothed in righteousness divine,
Bold I approach the eternal throne,

And claim the crown, through Christ, my own.

346.

Safety in Christ.

1 How do thy mercies close me round!
For ever be thy name adored;

I blush, in all things to abound;
The servant is above his Lord!

2 Inured to poverty and pain,
A suffering life my Master led;
The Son of God, the Son of Man,
He had not where to lay his head!
3 But, lo! a place He hath prepared
For me, whom watchful angels keep;
Yea, He Himself becomes my guard;
He smoothes my bed, and gives me sleep.
4 Jesus protects; my fears, begone!
What can the Rock of Ages move?

Safe in thy arms, I lay me down,
Thy everlasting arms of love.
5 While Thou art intimately nigh,
Who, who shall violate my rest?
Sin, earth, and hell, I now defy,
I lean upon my Saviour's breast.
6 I rest beneath the Almighty's shade,
My griefs expire, my troubles cease;
Thou, Lord, on whom my soul is stay'd,
Wilt keep me still in perfect peace.

7 Me for thine own 'Thou lov'st to take,
In time, and in eternity;

1

Thou never, never wilt forsake
A helpless soul that trusts in Thee.

347.

The Christian encouraged.

GIVE to the winds thy fears;

Hope, and be undismay'd;

God hears thy sighs, and counts thy tears,
God shall lift up thy head.

Through waves, through clouds and storms,

He gently clears thy way;

Wait thou his time; so shall the night

Soon end in joyous day.

2

He every where hath way,

3

And all things serve his might;

His every act pure blessing is,

His path unsullied light.

When He makes bare his arm,

What shall his work withstand?

When He his people's cause defends,
Who, who shall stay his hand?

Leave to his sovereign sway,

To choose, and to command;

With wonder fill'd, thou then shalt own,
How wise, how strong his hand :

4

Thou comprehend'st Him not;
Yet earth and heaven tell,
God sits as sovereign on the throne,
He ruleth all things well.

Thou seest our weakness, Lord,
Our hearts are known to Thee:
O, lift Thou up the sinking hand,
Confirm the feeble knee!

Let us, in life and death,
Boldly thy truth declare;

And publish, with our latest breath,
Thy love, and guardian care.

348.

The examples of the saints.

1 GIVE me the wings of faith, to rise
Within the veil, and see

The saints above, how great their joys.
How bright their glories be.

2 Once they were mourning here below,
And wet their couch with tears;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.

3 I ask them whence their victory came; They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to his death.

4 They mark'd the footsteps that He trode;
(His zeal inspired their breast;)
And, following their incarnate God,
Possess the promised rest.

5 Our glorious Leader claims our praise,
For his own pattern given;

While the long cloud of witnesses
Show the same path to heaven.

349.

Help in spiritual warfare.

1 FOR ever blessed be the Lord,
My Saviour and my shield;
He sends his Spirit with his word,
To arm me for the field.

2 When sin and hell their force unite,
He makes my soul his care;
Instructs me for the heavenly fight,
And guards me through the war.

3 A friend and helper so Divine,
Doth my weak courage raise;
He makes the glorious victory mine,
And his shall be the praise.

350.

The consolation of Gospel hope.

1 WHEN I can read my title clear
To mansions in the skies,
I bid farewell to every fear,
And wipe my weeping eyes.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And hellish darts be hurl'd,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage,
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares, like a wild deluge, come, And storms of sorrow fall;

May I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heaven, my all.

4 There shall I bathe my weary soul, In seas of heavenly rest,

And not a wave of trouble roll

Across my peaceful breast.

351.

Love beyond measure.

1 THY ceaseless, unexhausted love,
Unmerited and free,

Delights our evil to remove,
And helps our misery.

2 Thou waitest to be gracious still,
Thou dost with sinners bear;
That saved, we may thy goodness feel,
And all thy grace declare.

3 Thy goodness and thy truth to me,
To every soul abound:

A vast, unfathomable sea,

Where all our thoughts are drown'd.

4 Its streams the whole creation reach,
So plenteous is the store;
Enough for all, enough for each,
Enough for evermore.

5 Faithful, O Lord, thy mercies are ;
A Rock that cannot move :
A thousand promises declare
Thy constancy of love.

6 Throughout the universe it reigns,
Unalterably sure;

And while the truth of God remains,
The goodness must endure.

352.

For power to watch, and pray, and persevere.

A CHARGE to keep I have,

A God to glorify;

A never-dying soul to save,
And fit it for the sky;
To serve the present age,
My calling to fulfil :-

:

O may it all my powers engage,
To do my Master's will!
