PREFACE.

THE book now offered to the public needs little by way of explanation.

The reader will see at a glance that its principal features are:-

1. The Metrical form of the Psalms.

2. That they are arranged in the order of time, so as to illustrate the history of their authors, and in turn receive explanation from the incidents of David's and Solomon's life.

It will also be seen that the book divides itself into two parts: the first presenting the history of David's life, and the Psalms as illustrating his feelings at the period when he wrote them. The second presenting them in their application to the Lord Jesus Christ, of whom David and Solomon were only types.

An attempt is made here,-not to arrange and illustrate the Psalms, that is too vast a work for a weak pen -but to lead every reader to enter on a subject of peculiar blessedness; and to receive in his own soul a recompence for his work and time, only increasing in richness as he himself narrows the distance between himself and that loving Saviour whose life and love are ever present in the Word.

The following Tabular view of the events of the life of David to the beginning of Solomon's reign may aid the reader in taking in the plan on which this book is written, and perhaps following it out in his own study still more extensively.
