¶ The GOSPEL according to Saint JOHN.

CHAP. I.

the wilderness, Make straight the way of the

IN the beginning was the Word, and the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias.

Word was with God, and the Word was

God.

2 The same was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

6 There was a man seut from God, whose name was John.

7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.

8 He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

9 That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world] was made by him, and the world knew him

not.

11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name

24 And they which were sent were of the Pharisees.

25 And they asked him, and said unto him, Why baptizest thou then, if thou be not that Christ, nor Elias, neither that prophet?

26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not;

27 He it is, who coming after me, is preferred before me, whose shoe's latchet I am not worthy to unloose.

28 These things were done in Bethabara beyond Jordan, where John was baptizing. 29 The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world!

30 This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me;

for he was before me.

31 And I knew him not: but that be should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.

32 And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him.

33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said un13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of to me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, descending, and remaining on him, the same but of God. is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. 34 And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.

14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we belfeld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

15 ¶ John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me; for he was before me.

16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace.

17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

18 No man bath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

35 Again, the next day after, John stood, and two of his disciples;

36 And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

37 And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

38 Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellst thou?

39 He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about

20 And he confessed, and denied not; but confessed, I am not the Christ.

21 And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No.

40 One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

41 He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Mes sias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ

22 Then said they unto him, Who art 42 And he brought him to Jesus. And thou? that we may give an answer to them when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art that sent us what sayest thou of thyself? 43 The day following Jesus would go and his disciples; and they continued there forth into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and not many days. saith unto him, Follow me.

44 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter.

45 Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.

46 And Nathanael said unto him, Can there any good thing come out of Nazareth? Philip saith unto him, Come and see.

47 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and saith of him, Behold an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!

13 And the Jews' passover was at hand; and Jesus went up to Jerusalem,

14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen, and sheep, and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;

16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Fa ther's house an house of merchandise.

17 And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.

18 Then answered the Jews, and said

48 Nathanael saith unto him, Whence knowest thou me? Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called thee, when thou wast under the fig-tree, I saw thee. 49 Nathanael answered and said unto unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou seeing that thou doest these things? art the King of Israel. 19 Jesus answered and said unto them, 50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Be-Destroy this temple, and in three days I will cause I said unto thee, I saw thee under the raise it up. fig-tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.

20 Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?

51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man. CHAP. II.

21 But he spake of the temple of his body. 22 When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

35 The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

14 ¶ And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up;

36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.

CHAP. IV.

17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

4 And he must needs go through Samaria 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel

18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph of God. 6 Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thes on the well: and it was about the sixth hour 7There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her,Give me to drink.

8 (For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

22 T After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, lí thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; then wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

23¶ And John also was baptizing in non, near to Salim, because there was much water there; and they came, and were baptized: 24 For John was not yet cast into prison. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thes 25 ¶ Then there arose a question between hast nothing to draw with, and the well is some of John's disciples and the Jews about deep: from whence then hast thou that livpurifying. ing water?

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him, must worship him in spirit and in truth. 25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ when he is come, he will tell us all things. 26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

:

48 Then said Jesus unto him, Except yo see signs and wonders, ye will not believe.

49 The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die.

50 Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way.

51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him, and told him, saying, Thy son liveth.

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her water-pot, and went her way into the city, and saith to

the men,

29 Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him.

31 In the mean while his disciples prayed him, saying, Master, eat.

32 But he said unto them, I have meat to eat that ye know not of.

33 Therefore said the disciples one to another, Hath any man brought him ought to eat?

41 And many more believed because of his own word;

42 Aud said unto the woman, Now we believe, not because of thy saying; for we have heard him ourselves, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Saviour of the world. 43 Now, after two days he departed thence, and went into Galilee: 44 For Jesus himself testified, that a pro phet hath no honour in his own country. 45 Then, when he was come into Galilee,

34 Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.

52 Then enquired he of them the hour when he began to amend. And they said unto him, Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.

53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in the which Jesus said unto him, Thy son liveth; and himself believed, and his whole house.

54 This is again the second miracle that Jesus did, when he was come out of Judea into Galilee.

38 I sent you to reap that whereon ye stowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours.

5 And a certain man was there, which had an infirmity thirty and eight years.

39 T And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.

6 When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? 7 The impotent man answered him, Sir, I

29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, anto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.

8 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

9 And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked and on the same day was the sabbath.

10 The Jews therefore said unto him that was cured, It is the sabbath-day; it is not lawful for thee to carry the bed.

11 He answered them, He that made me whole, the same said unto me, Take up thy bed, and walk.

12 Then asked they him, What man is that which said unto thee, Take up thy bed, and walk?

13 And he that was healed wist not who it was; for Jesus had conveyed himself away, a multitude being in that place.

14 Afterward Jesus findeth him in the temple, and said unto him, Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.

15 The man departed, and told the Jews that it was Jesus which had made him whole.

16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath-day. 17¶ But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.

18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that Go! was his Father, making himself equal with God.

19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.

22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son;

23 Tnat all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son, honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.

30 I can of mine own self do nothing: as I hear, I judge and my judgment is just; because I seek not mine own will, but the will of the Father which hath seat me.

31 ¶ If I bear witness of myself, my witness is not true.

26 For as the Father hath life in himself, so hath be given to the Son to have life in himself;

32 There is another that beareth witnes of me; and I know that the witness which be witnesseth of me is true.

27 And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son

33 Ye sent unto John, and he bare wit ness unto the truth.

34 But I receive not testimony from man but these things I say, that ye might be saved 35 He was a burning and a shining light, and ye were willing for a season to rejoice in his light.

36 But I have greater witness that that of John for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

37 And the Father himself, which bat sent me, hath borne witness of me. Ye have neither heard his voice at any time, nor seen his shape.

20 For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.

:

21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quick-ye receive me not: if another shall come i eneth whom he will his own name, him ye will receive.

44 How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the bonour that cometh from God only?

45 Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is me that accuseth yet, even Moses, in whom ye trust.

46 For had ye believed Moses, ye woo'd have believed me: for he wrote of me. 47 But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? CHAP. VI.

24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that! heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from leath unto life.

38 And ye have not his word abiding in you for whom he hath sent, him ye be lieve not.

39 Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they ar they which testify of me.

40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.

41 I receive not honour from men. 12 But I know you, that ye have not the love of God in you.

43 I am come in my Father's name, and
