The Illustrations have been finished with as much care as those destined for Annuals of loftier pretensions; and have been engraved, without an exception, from original designs furnished expressly for the work. To ensure a degree of excellence in this department of the volume, of which its predecessors have not been enabled to boast, it has been placed under the direction of an eminent engraver, who having an interest in the book, has naturally been stimulated to render it as worthy of public patronage as possible. The binding will also, it is hoped, be considered more attractive than that heretofore adopted. The recent diminution of the number of their competitors, has encouraged the proprietors of "THE NEW YEAR'S GIFT" to anticipate such an increase of purchasers, even in these inauspicious times, as fully to warrant the large additional expense they have incurred in its production. |
