QUESTIONS FROM WATTS'S HYMNS.

To the Editor of the Cottager's Monthly Visitor. SIR,

As Dr. Watts's Hymns for children are too useful, and too attractive not to have found their way into most of the cottages where your little Publication pays its regular visits, it has struck me, that, perhaps, there may be some parents who might be glad of a little assistance in questioning their children on the important subjects of these admirable little poems. I have, therefore, annexed a few questions to two of the hymns; and, if you think them likely, in any degree, to answer the purpose intended, I will, with much pleasure, continue my task.

The plan which I would suggest is, that a copy of the Hymns should be given to the children with the Scripture references here introduced, marked on the margin of each. The children should then find out these passages in their Bibles, and learn them by heart, before the questions are put to them. I am, Sir,

Yours very truly,

H.

HYMN I.

How glorious is our heav'nly King,
Who reigns above the sky!
How shall a child presume to sing
His dreadful Majesty.

How great his pow'r is none can tell,
Nor think how large his grace;
Not men below or saints that dwell
On high, before his face.

Not angels that stand round the Lord,
Can search his secret will;
But they perform his heav'nly word,
And sing his praises still.

Then let me join this holy train,
And my first off'rings bring,'
Th' eternal God will not disdain
To hear an infant sing.

My heart resolves, my tongue obeys,
And angels shall rejoice

To hear their mighty Maker's praise
Sound from a feeble voice.

Who is our heavenly King?
God.

Why do you call him our King?

Because he ruleth over all things both in heaven and earth.

Prove this from Scripture.

Psalm ciii. 19. "The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all."

Can any one tell how great God's

No.

power is?

Prove from Scripture that God's power is great. Psalm cxlvii. 5. "Great is our Lord, and of great power, his understanding is infinite.”

Who are those that dwell on high before the face of God?

Saints.

Who are saints on earth?

Holy persons.

Who are those saints on high here spoken of? The spirits of just men made perfect in heaven. Who are those that stand round the Lord?

Angels.

What is it which they cannot search into?
The secret will of God.

But what do they do?

66

They perform his heavenly word, and sing his praises still."

Prove this from Scripture.

Psalm ciii. 20. "Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word."

What holy train do you desire to join?
The holy train of saints and angels.

What do you desire to join them in doing?
In praising and obeying God.

What does our Church service teach us that the Cherubim and Seraphim cry continually?

"Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth." What are the first offerings that you are to bring to God?

My prayers and praises.

Will God disdain to receive your offerings, because of your youth?

No. "The eternal God will not disdain to hear an infant sing."

Where do you learn this?

Matt. xxi. 15, 16. "And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David, they were sore displeased; and said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea, have ye never read, out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise!

If you praise God thus with your heart as well as with your tongue, who will rejoice?

[blocks in formation]

"To hear their mighty Maker's praise sound from a feeble voice."

HYMN II.

I sing the Almighty Pow'r of God,
That made the mountains rise,
That spread the flowing seas abroad,
And built the lofty skies.

I sing the wisdom that ordained
The sun to rule the day,

The moon shines full at his command,
And all the stars obey.

I sing the goodness of the Lord
That filled the earth with food,
He formed the creatures with his word,
And then pronounced them good.

Lord how thy wonders are display'
Where'er I turn mine eye!

If I survey the ground I tread,
Or gaze upon the sky!

There's not a plant or flower that grows
But makes thy glories known,
And clouds arise, and tempests blow
By order from thy throne.

Creatures (as num'rous as they be)
Are subject to thy care,
There's not a place where we can flee
But God is present there.

In heav'n he shines with beams of love,
With wrath in hell beneath!

"Tis on his earth I stand or move,
And 'tis his air I breathe.' !

His hand is my perpetual guard,
He keeps me with his eye;
Why should I then forget the Lord
Who is for ever nigh?
