3 Words of loud and ready talkers,
Clearest creeds will not suffice;
Broken hearts and humble walkers
These are dear in Jesus' eyes.

4 Party zeal and disputation,
Talent, knowledge, all are vain;
Every one who gains salvation
Must through grace be born again.

411 REVELATION vii. 9–17. Hebrews vi.

12.C. M.

H, could we for one moment rise,
The bliss of saints to share,
Then we should see how great their joys
How bright their glories are.

2 Once they were mourning here below,
Mingling their toil with tears;
And wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sorrows and with fears.

3 Ask we from whence their victory came?
All, with united breath,
Ascribe their glory to the Lamb,
Their triumph to his death.

4 Ransomed from hell by him who died,
And by his Spirit taught,
Pardoned, adopted, sanctified,

A crown of life they sought.

5 Marking the path the Saviour trod, Along that path they pressed;

And, following their incarnate God,
They reached the promised rest.

6 Our glorious Leader claims our praise,
For his own pattern given;
And these, his faithful witnesses,
Show the same road to heaven.

PSALM XCV. 7, 8.

H, do not let the word depart,

L. M.

And close thine eyes against the light; Poor sinner, harden not thy heart,

Thou would'st be saved, why not to night.

2 To-morrow's sun may never rise, To bless thy long deluded sight; This is the time, oh, then be wise, Thou would'st be saved, why not to night. 3 Our God in pity lingers still,

And wilt thou thus his love requite?
Renounce at length thy stubborn will,
Thou would'st be saved, why not to night.
4 The world has nothing left to give,
It has no new, no pure delight;
Oh, try the life which Christians live,
Thou would'st be saved, why not to night.

5 Our blessed Lord refuses none,
Who would to him their souls unite;
Then be the work of grace begun,

Thou would'st be saved, why not to-night.

PSALM li. 10-12.

OH, for a closer walk with God,

A calm and heavenly frame;

A light to shine upon the road

That leads me to the Lamb.
2 Where is the blessedness I knew
When first I saw the Lord ?
Where is the soul-refreshing view
Of Jesus and his word?

3 What peaceful hours I once enjoyed!
How sweet their memory still;
But they have left an aching void,
The world can never fill.

4 Return, O Holy Dove, return,
Sweet Messenger of rest;

I hate the sins that made thee mourn,
And drove thee from my breast.

5 The dearest idol I have known,
Whate'er that idol be,

Help me to tear it from thy throne,
And worship only thee,

6 So shall my walk be close with God,
Calm and serene my frame;

So purer light shall mark the road,
That leads me to the Lamb.

1 OH, for a heart to praise my God,

A heart from guilt set free;

C. M.

C. M.

Sprinkled with that atoning blood,
So freely shed for me.

2 A heart resigned, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where Jesus reigns alone.

3 A humble, lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean;
Which neither life nor death can part
From him that dwells within:

4 A heart in every thought renewed,
And filled with love divine;
Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine.

5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart,
Come quickly from above;

Write thy new name upon my heart,
Thy new,
best name of Love.

OH,

1 CORINTHIANS XV. 55, 57.

H, for an overcoming faith,
To cheer our toilsome hours,
To triumph o'er the fear of death,
And hell's malignant powers.

2 Those who true faith in Jesus have,
However weak may sing,

Where is thy victory, O grave?
And where, O death, thy sting?

C. M.

3 If sin be pardoned we're secure,
Death hath no sting beside;
And of that pardon we are sure,
Since Jesus for us died.

4 As sinners, we must droop and die,
But thanks to God be paid,
Through Christ we have the victory,
And are no more afraid.

PSALM V. 11. 12.

H happy they who know the Lord,
With whom he deigns to dwell;
He feeds and cheers them by his word,
His arm supports them well.

2 To them, in each distressing hour,
His throne of grace is near;

And when they plead his love and power
He stands engaged to hear.

3 He helped his saints in ancient days,
Who trusted in his name;

And we can witness to his praise,
His love is still the same.

4 His presence sweetens all our cares,
And makes our burden light;
A word from him dispels our fears,
And gilds the gloom of night.

5 Lord, we expect to suffer here,
Nor would we dare repine;

C. M.
