Hide Thy face from my

sins:

10

11

12

13

14

15

And blot out all mine iniquities.

A clean heart make me, O God:
And renew within me a fixèd spirit.

Cast me not out from Thy presence :
And take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.
Restore me the joy of Thy salvation:
And with a zealous spirit sustain me.

III.

Then will I willingly teach

Transgressors thy ways:

That sinners may be converted to Thee.
Deliver me from blood-guiltiness,

O God, my Saviour-God :

My tongue will sing of Thy righteousness.
Open my lips, O Lord:

And my mouth will utter thy praise.

IV.

16

For Thou desirest not sacrifice;

17

18

Or I would assuredly give it :

Thou hast no delight in burnt-offerings.

The sacrifices of God

Are a broken spirit:

A broken and contrite heart,

O God, thou wilt not despise.

V.

Do good, in Thy favour, to Sion:
Build up the walls of Jerusalem.

19

Then wilt Thou have pleasure
In sacrifices and burnt-offerings:

Then shall young bullocks ascend Thine altar. STROPHE DIVISION 6. 6. 3. 2. 2. =12. 7.

PSALM LII.

TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN. A LESSON OF DAVID, WHEN

[blocks in formation]

1 WHY dost thou glory in mischief, O mighty one? The loving-kindness of God

2

3

Endureth all day long.

II.

Thy tongue deviseth wickedness:
As a sharpen'd razor working deceitfully.

Thou lovest evil more than goodness:

And lying more than speaking righteousness.

PAUSE.

4

5

III.

Thou lovest all words of destructiveness,

O thou deceitful tongue!

God will likewise destroy thee for ever:

6

7

He will snatch thee away and pluck thee

Out of thy domicile :

And root thee out of the land of the living.

PAUSE.

IV.

The righteous shall see, and fear, and laugh at

him :

"Behold the man!

He made not God his defence:

"But put his trust

"In the multitude of his riches,

"And was strong in his wickedness."

8

V.

But as for me,

I am like a flourishing olive-tree

In the house of God:

I trust in God's loving-kindness

For ever and ever.

I will praise Thee for ever, because Thou hast
done this:

And will hope in Thy Name before Thy saints:
For it is good.

PSALM LIII.

ON SICKNESS. A LESSON

OF DAVID.

TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN.

I.

THE depraved hath said in his heart,

"There is no God."

They have done corrupt and abominable iniquity :
There is none that doeth good.

[blocks in formation]

4

5

The whole of mankind is turn'd:

They are rancid together.
There is none that doeth good,

Not even one.

II.

Do not they know who work iniquity?

Eating up my people as bread,

They call not on God.

There are they terribly afraid,

Where was no fear :

For God doth scatter the bones

Of him that encamps against thee:

Thou hast put them to shame, for God has rejected them.

6 O that the salvation of Israel were given from Sion! When God restores His captive people, Shall Jacob exult and Israel be glad.

STROPHE-DIVISION 3. 3.

PSALM LIV.

TO THE CHIEF MUSICIAN. FOR STRINGED INSTRUMENTS.

A LESSON OF DAVID, WHEN THE ZIPHITES CAME

AND SAID TO SAUL, "DOTH NOT DAVID HIDE HIMSELF WITH US?"

1

3

I.

SAVE me, O God, through Thy Name:
And avenge me through Thy strength.
Hearken, O God, to my prayer :
Give ear to the words of my mouth,
For strangers are risen against me:
And
oppressors seek my life:
They set not God before them.

II.

4

Lo, God is my Helper: the Lord
Is with them that uphold my life.

5

6

The ill shall recoil on my watchers :
In Thy truth Thou wilt destroy them.

With a free-will offering

Will I sacrifice to Thee:
