III.

12 Happy the people whose God is Jehovah : The nations selected by Him for His heritage. From heaven Jehovah looks down :

13

14

15

He reviews the sons of men.

From the place of His dwelling He looks
On all the dwellers on earth ;—

He who fashion'd their hearts alike:
And discriminates all their works.

16 No king is saved by a numerous host :

17

18

19

Nor a warrior rescued by greatness of strength.
A vain thing the horse for safety:

By his great strength he doth not deliver.

Lo, Jehovah's eye is on those

Who fear Him, and trust in His mercy;
To deliver from death their soul:

And to keep them alive in famine.

I.

I will bless Jehovah at all times:

In my mouth shall His praise be continually.
In Jehovah my soul doth boast:

May the humble hear, and be glad.

Exalt Jehovah with me:

And extol we His name together.

I sought Jehovah, and He heard me :
And from all my fears deliver'd me.

They look'd to Him and were brighten'd:
And their faces may not blush.

This poor man cried, and Jehovah heard :
And saved him from all his distresses.

Jehovah's Angel encamps

Round those who fear Him, and rescues them.
O taste and see that Jehovah is good:

How blest is the man who takes shelter in Him!
O fear Jehovah, His saints:

For they who fear Him lack nothing.

The lions' cubs suffer want and are famish'd:
But Jehovah's seekers lack nought that is good.

II.

Come, children, listen to me:

I will teach you the fear of Jehovah.

Who is the man desirous of life:
That loveth prosperous days?

Refrain thy tongue from evil :
Thy lips from speaking guile.
From evil turn: be doing good:

Be seekers of peace, and pursue it.
The eyes of Jehovah are toward the righteous:
And His ears are toward their cry.
The face of Jehovah is against ill-doers :

To erase from earth their remembrance.
The righteous cry, and Jehovah hears:

And from all their troubles delivers them.
Jehovah is nigh to the broken of heart:
And saves the bruised in spirit.

The righteous hath many troubles :

From them all Jehovah delivers him.

He keepeth all his bones :

Not one of them is broken.

Misfortune slays the wicked:

They who hate the righteous are punish'd.

Jehovah redeems the soul of His servants :

And none are punish'd who make Him their refuge.

PSALM XXXV.

A PSALM OF DAVID.

I.

CONTEND, Jehovah, with my contenders:
And those who consume me do thou consume.
Grasp quickly shield and buckler :

And stand up as my help.

Lay hold on the spear, and stop my pursuers :
Say to my soul, "I am thy salvation."

Let them be confounded and put to shame,
Who seek my life:

Let them retreat and be brought to confusion,
Who desire my hurt.

Let them be as chaff before the wind,

Jehovah's Angel chasing them :
Let their way be dark and slippery,

Jehovah's Angel pursuing them.

For without a cause have they hid
Their pit-net for me:

They have causelessly delv'd for my soul.

Unawares let ruin befal him :

Let the net he has hidden catch him :

Let him fall therein to his ruin.

So will my soul exult in Jehovah :

It will joy in His salvation.

10

All my bones will say,

"Jehovah, who is like Thee,

"Deliv'ring the poor

"From him that is too strong for him :
"From his spoiler, the poor and needy?"

II.

Malicious witnesses rise up:

What I wot not of, they inquire of me.

They requite me evil for good:

Bereavement of my soul.

But as for me, in their sickness
Sackcloth was my clothing:

I afflicted my soul with fasting:
And my prayer return'd to my bosom.
I behaved myself as if he

Were a friend or a brother of mine:
As one who mourns for his mother,
I was bow'd down in squalid attire.
And now they rejoice at my halting:
And gather themselves together:
They gather themselves against me,
The abjects, whom I know not:
They tear, and are not silent.

The vile, who mock for a cake,
Do gnash their teeth against me.

O Lord, how long wilt Thou be a spectator?
Rescue my soul from their desolation :

From the lions' cubs mine only one.
