When fitten by his Father's rod,
In his deep agony,

Opprefs'd, and lab'ring with the load
Of our iniquity,

Behold, the Lamb of God implores
Deliv'rance not in vain:

Both death and hell he overpow'rs,
And loads his foes with pain..

ORD, in thine ire chaftife me not
Thy chaftifement I'll bear;

But cannot bear thine

anger

hot:

"Tis that would give me fear.
For, lo, behold, thy fervant, Lord,
Before thee trembling ftands,
With bofom bare, to meet thy fword,
Thruft home by-thy own hands.
Ordain'd by thee a facrifice,

For all thine elect race,

"Tis life and joy,' thy fervant cries,
For me to be their peace:'
'Tis life and joy for me and them;
Our perfons are moft dear

To thee, our God, as thy own name;
But fin muft vengeance bear:

My blood fhall, therefore, well atone

For all their deadly crimes;

And, when the fhades of death are flown, We'll fhine in heav'nly climes.

2 But, now, my bones are all on fire;
"Tis death and hell within;

For wrath and indignation dire
Are pour'd on me for fin.

3 Lord, heal me when thy time is come:
How long, how long, O Lord,

Ere I fhall taste of comfort some,
Some respite from thy fword!

My

My foul, affrighted, trembling flies,
And throws herself on thee,

And, when the pangs of death furprise,
She'll in thy bofom be.

4 Then, O Jehovah, for the love:
Thou beareft thy own name,
Thou'lt not deftroy thy Turtle-dove,
Who comes thy love to claim.
5 For in the grave if I fhould lie,
And never rife again,

To view the glories of the sky,,
But with the dead remain:

Who fhould aloft thy praises raise?
Who fing thy faithfulnefs?"
Who triumph in thy righteous ways?
And who thy name confefs?
But well I know, thy word is paft,
(Thy word fhall be fulfill'd),
When thy Meffiah breathes his laft,
When love thy. Lamb has kill'd,

(For love has flain thy Lamb, O God,.
The love of thee alone),
Then I fhall fing beyond thy flood,
Death, when thy worft is done!!
6 I travail all my days in birth,

I fill the world with groans;
But, lo, my groans fhall turn to mjrth,,
And fill the world with fons.

Ten thousand thoufand joyful heirs,
O God, to thee and me,
Solace my foul for all my cares:

Mine offspring, Father, fee!

7 Mine eye grew dim, my heart grew fad
For this, full many a day;

But, now, thy face hath made me glad :
My grief is fled away.

8. Away

8 Away from me, ye workers all Of foul iniquity!"

9

The Lord hath heard my fervent call,
And doom'd your fouls to die.

10 Thus, Lord, let all mine enemies,
Whelm'd with eternal fhame,

Lie funk in hell, who fcorn to prize
Thy dear Meah's name.

PSALM. VII.

If the following paraphrafe of this Pfalm, as fpoken in the perfon of Meffiah the Lord, fhall not feem to carry its own evidence in its befom, the confiderate reader will be pleated to confult, among others, thefe few parallels, with their refpectivé evidences, viz. Pfal. iz. x. xviii. xxxv. xliv. and xciv.

Meffiah pleads his innocence,

And prays his caufe may fail,
If e'er he gave a just offence,
Or harm'd the public weal;
But, lo, the Lord attefts his caufe,
And magnifies the fame;

While fin on finners vengeance draws,
And clothes them o'er with flame.

MY

Y God, Jehovah, fee my ftate!
My foul reforts to thee:
She claims thy wings for her retreat
From thofe who caufe her flee.
O how they flow, like vultures keen,
In clouds, against thy Son,
And all, with deadly havock, ween
To tear me bone from bone!

Preferve me from their cruel claws,

And fave me in thy love;

2 Left they should triumph o'er thy laws, And o'er thy Turtle-dove.

30 Lord, my God, if I have done
A wicked thing at all;

Then, charge it home on me thy Son,
Let me before thee fall.

If ere a finful deed, my hand,
A finful word, my tongue,

Or finful thought, my heart has ftain'd
Let me, then, bear the wrong;
Let me before the hunters go,
Like chaff before the wind;
And let my blood like water flow;
No mercy let me find.

4 If ere I recompenfed ought
But kindness to my foe,
For all the evil he hath wrought
Towards my overthrow;

5 Then, let him tear mine honour down,
And lay it in the dust,

And tread upon mine ancient crown,
His prize and conqueft juft!

6 But rife, O Lord, in burning wrath,
Mine innocence atteft,

And give mine ambush'd foes to death,
Who give my foul no rest.
Thy faithfulnefs I claim, O Lord;
I claim no more than due;
That I be judged by thy word:
Thy word attefts me TRUE.
7 Thy people, therefore, all around,
Redeemed by my blood,

Affembled, fhall thy praifes found,
Through heav'n and earth, aloud.
Advance thy glory, and thy Son,
O'er all thy worlds abroad:
The glory of thy kingdom won,
Returns to thee, O God.

8 Jehovah

8 Jehovah fhall the people judge,
And judge them by the SON;
Nor fhall the just his judgment grudge;
But, ah, how finners moan!
Jehovah, judge me by thy word;
Jehovah judge thy Son:

9

I'll ftand before thy brandifh'd fword;
Nor dread what I have done.

I'll plead the perfect righteousness
I've finifh'd in my blood;
And, now, thy pledged faithfulness
Shall make thy promife good.

Let mifchief fall on finners all,

For fo is thy decree;

For thou behold'st, and quite unfold'ft

The fecrets thou doft fee.

The juft fhall rife, and reach the skies;

But finners fink to hell:: So let them die, eternally,

Against me who rebel.

10 But God, my fhield, will keep the field,
And ward off all their blows:
11 The juft he loves, and them he proves,,
And quite deftroys their foes.

For the defence of innocence
Is aye my Judge's part;
But he detefts thofe hellish pefts,

The men of double heart.

12 Unless they turn, they foon fhall mourn, And 'feel the glitt'ring (word:

I fee it high, in act to fly,

And fmite them, at his word.

13 For, war declar'd, and bow prepar'd,
With all the fhafts of death,

He but fufpends, for holy ends,
To aggravate the wrath.
