8 Now, for my friends and brethrens fake,
Peace, peace to thee, I'll ever fay;
In my own blood thy peace l'il make,
And none thy peace shall take away:
Because thou art the house of God,

9

My foul in thee shall ever dwell: I'll feek the good of my abode,

And make thee, like thy Lord, excel!

HERE the Lord, the alone speaker in this Psalm, intercedes for himself, and for all his followers, in whofe afflictions he is afflicted, with the feeling of whofe infirmities he is touched; leaving us an example, that we should follow his steps.

Lo, thus Meffiah intercedes,

And acts the fympathifing part:
His grieved heart for's brethren bleeds,
And all their forrow, wound bis heart.

Thou who dwelleft in the heav'n,

I lift my wo-worn eyes to thee,
Till thy falvation fhall be giv'n,
To fet my foul from forrow free.
2 As fervants eyes explore and trace

The motions of their mafter's hand,
When sketching o'er, with care and grace,
Some rare defign which he hath plann'd;
As hand-maid's eyes her mistress view,
With expectation eager, keen,
When pointing out fome fervice new,"
And which fhe ne'er before had feen:
Ey'n fo our eyes, O God, do live
And dwell upon thy Providence,.
Till thou thy promis'd mercy give,
Our painful toil to recompence..

3 Exceed

3 Exceedingly, with fore contempt,

Our foul replenish'd, wails and mourns; Of all thy faints, no one exempt

From pain before the Lord fojourns.
Have mercy, Lord, haye mercy now,
Have mercy on thy fervants dear;
Bring thy new covenant to view,
And let the old one difappear:

4 Our foul is fill'd exceedingly

With fcorn of thofe that dwell at eafe,
And with the contempt of proud, high-
Swoln, lofty-minded pharifees.

PSALM CXXIV.

THE church delivered, and triumphing with her Lord.

Th' almighty Lord, upon our fide,
(Avaunt ye all malicious foes!).
Roll'd back again the fwelling tide,
When death and hell against us rofe.

HAD

AD not the Lord espous'd our cause,
God's Ifra'l now with joy may fing,
When men arofe our name to raze,
Defying Ifra'l, with her King:
2 Had not the Lord efpous'd our caufe,
God's Ifra❜l, now efcap'd, may tell,
When they arofe against his laws,
With all the raging pow'r of hell;

3 Then they had fwallow'd us alive,
Confumed by their flaming wrath;
4. And made their billows o'er us drive,
And roll'd us down the steeps of death:

5

Then had the fea's devouring waves,

O'erwhelming us, gone o'er our foul
The waters proud had been our graves,
Which fiercely round us then did rowl.
6 Blefs'd be the Lord, who gave us not
Unto their rav'nous teeth a prey;
But quell'd their rage upon the fpot,
And made them, fcreaming, fly away!
7 Our fouls escaped as a bird.

Out of the fowler's deadly gin;
The fnare is broke-they were abfurd
Who thought to keep our foul therein:

8 Our help is in Jehovah's name,

Who made the earth and high heav'ns too:
Meffiah's he who both did frame:
To God and his Meffrah bow.

PSALM CXXV.

THE ftability of God is the stability of his faints, but the overthrow of his enemies.

As Zion-mount for ever rears

Her height and glory o'er the plain;
So all her fons, through endiefs years,
Who truft in God, with God hall reign.

HOSE in Jehovah who confide,

THOSE

Like Zion-mount, fhall ne'er remove;

But fhall for evermore abide,

Eftablifh'd in Jehovah's love.

2 As round about Jerufalem

The everlasting mountains fand,
Jehovah fo furroundeth them
Who faithful are in Zion's land:

3. For,

3 For, do, the rod of wickednessa hod On Zion's lot fhall not remain;

Left thofe who love her righteousness Affociate with the wicked train. 4 Do good, O Lord, to thofe who love To fee thy grace and glory fhine; a And those who in their hearts approve Of truth and righteoufnefs divine. 5 And as for those who go aftray,

And love the hateful ways of hell; The Lord for hypocrites fhall flay; But peace fhall be on Ifrael.

[blocks in formation]

THE eternal redemption of the church of God, with her Redeemer on her Head, leading captivity captive, described and praised in heavenly ftrains of gratitude and joy.

Let earth arife, and meet the skies!
The Lord he comes again

4

From yonder fkies, and fays, Arife,"
Ye dead, with me to reign.

WHEN Zion's bondage God recall'd,

We were like men that dream'd:

So in a moment difinthrall'd,'

It foarcely real feemid.

2 With laughter then he fill'd our mouth, Our tongue burfts out and fings

The heathens all exclaim, Of truth,
• God does for them great things!'

3. Great things God does for us indeed!
For which we praise his name;
Lord, perfect all thy works with fpeed,
Thy works of noted fame:

4 Lord,

&

[ocr errors]

4 Lord, call thy whole election home,
Recal our bondage all;

Lord, all in ftreaming glory come,
And us to glory call.

5 They fow in tears, who reap in joy,
Before the Lord their God;

Whofe glory none can e'er enjoy,
Unchaften'd by his rod :

6 O blefs'd is he, who, going forth,
And, mourning as he

goes,

With freaming eyes bedews the earth,
While precious feed he fows:

Bearing his basket bath'd in tears,

You fee him for a time;

But, lo, with joy he turns, and bears
His fheaves along with him:

So came Meffiah, friend of men!

(A Man of forrows he!)

To fight with grief, and tears, and pain,

n

That we might conqu❜rors be;

Behold, he comes the fecond time,
To wipe away our tears,
And takes us all along with him,
For everlafting years.

PSALM CXXVII.

READER, if thou art one Spirit with the Lord, does not thy very heart within thee burn and glow with holy indignation and fhame, for the grofs proftitution, and most unhallowed applica cation, of this and the following divinely delicate. Pfalms, to the ordinary purposes of a breeding wife, with a parcel of children about her in a man's lofe! How grofsly have they infulted the Spouse of Chrift! The Lord, her Hufband, vindicate his glory.
