communication, and derivation from him: for to whom, befides him alone, of all the fons of Adam, will fuch a character and blessednefs otherways apply? For, feparate from him, and as they are in themselves, the verdict of JEHOVAH stands thus declared and confirmed against them all; There is none righteous, no not one.' Neither can they be juftified in his fight by the deeds of the law: for by the law is the knowledge of fin.' They are all under the curfe, fhut up by the law under fin, under wrath, &c. But, though this be the fituation of all who believe not the gospel, yet by him all who do believe it are justified from all things from which they could not be juftified by the law of Mofes.' Thus his people all become righteous, as the prophet fpeaks, not indeed through works of righteoufnefs done by themfelves, but through the righteoufnefs of God, which is

by the faith of Jesus Christ to all, and upon all ⚫ them that believe,' who are juftified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift'who is made of God the end of the law for righteoufnefs' (or perfonal juftification) to every one that believeth'-as it is written, If thou shalt confefs with thy mouth the Lord Jefus, and fhalt believe in thine heart that God. hath raised him from the dead, thou fhalt be faved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteoufnefs, and with the mouth confeffion is made unto falvation.'-In finging this Palm, therefore, the true worshippers are directed to rejoice in CHRIST JESUS, their Mediator, Advocate, and Forerunner, who for them magnified the law, and made it honourable, by redeeming them from the curfe thereof with his own blood; and, being now through the knowledge of the truth fet everlaftingly beyond the reach and fear of condemnation by the law, they are taught to confider it in the hand of the Mediator, as the royal law of liberty' to reverence it, to love it, and to obey it; not with terror, as flaves trembling for fear of damnations

damnation, nor with mercenary confiderations, as hirelings working for the wages of eternal life, but with the pure, generous affections of love, gratitude, and joy, before the Lord their Saviour, who hath redeemed them not only from the curfe of the law, but also from all fuch unhallowed and dispiriting meditations concerning it; constrained by his love to hate evil, and to give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness; while, with holy heart-fubduing awe, aftonished and amazed at fuch fovereign, diftinguishing mercy, manifefted towards themfelves, they behold the terrors of the Lord falling dreadful upon all the fearful and un, believing, and overwhelming them with eternal perdition. So fhall it fare with all those whom death, in an evil hour, fhall furprise without faith, and fo without Chrift, without God, without hope in the world.'-Like chaff, they fhall be driven away in the judgment, and burnt with everlasting fire; whereas thofe, who are in union with Chrift by the faith of his refurrection, shall, like the palm-tree, flourish evermore: because he liveth, who is the Lord their Righteousness, from whom their fruit is found, they fhall live alfo, and live with God.--Upon the whole, it may be ebferved, that the fame diftinct line of interpretation runs visibly, like a beam of light, through the otherways utterly impenetrable darknets and obfcurity of all the prophetic writings, but most eminentJy through the whole book of Pfalms; difpeiling the clouds of erroneous reprefentation, and clearly discovering the glory of God, as it fhines, and ever fhone, in the face of Jefus; and darting, into every wife and underitanding heart, the inftructions and confolations of the Holy Ghost. See particularly, among many others, thefe following Pfalms, viz. iii. iv. v. xv. xvi. xvii. xviii. xxiv. xxv. xxvi. xxxv. xl. &c. but efpecially the cxix. throughout-All of which, as fhall be thown in the proper place, belong to the fame clafs, and muft, of confequence, be opened by the fame key. Th'eter

Th' eternal perfect blefedness
Of David's LORD and SON,
Whofe everlafting righteousness
For us the bleffing wen,
Let all the churches fweetly fing!
And chant aloud their joy!

The LORD, EMMANUEL, is our King;
He'll death and hell destroy.

THA

HAT Man! how great's his bleffednefs &
And JESUS is the Man,

Who comes with perfect righteousness,
The Holy peerless ONE!
His Father's law must be fulfill'd,
So holy, juft, and good!
Or elfe, devoted to be fpill'd,
Muft flow, the finner's blood-

2 He rush'd into the fiery flame,
He lov'd the law fo well,
For finners bearing all the blame,
And bearing pains of hell.
For fons of Adam, all aftray,
Have wander'd to and fro;
But He's the Shepherd, and the way
Whereby the flock fhall go.

3 His fheep fhall hear their Shepherd's voice,
(He calls to paftures green),
And, hearing, they fhall all rejoice,
And with him ftill be seen.

No fox, nor prowling wolf, fhall dare
Among them to appear;

For pow'r, and love, and wifdom, are
Their guardians round the year...

4 Their Lord, exalted, they shall fee,
The BRANCH of JESSE's ftem,

To royal glory, like the tree
Of life by EDEN's ftream;
A 3

While

While they around, like all the trees,
Of paradife, fhall grow;

And on them, an immortal breeze,

The BREATH of GOD, fhall blow..

5 Immortal as their SIRE, the King, Immortal are the fons:

Immortal praises they fhall fing,

And wear immortal crowns.
But, ah! the foolish are not fo;
The fons of unbelief;

On them a fiery blaft fhall blow,
And change their joy to grief.

6 Their glory fhall to vapour turn,
Their bloffom fly like fmoke-
Thus fin-enchanted fouls fhall mourn,
How foon the fpell is broke!

To judgment!-judgment!-See the King:
Amid furrounding fire!

All heav'n before him on the wing,

The worlds below retire.

The thrones are fet, the heav'ns are fled,

The worlds are now no more!

In glory gay the faints are clad;

In hell the finners roar.

Then, now to-day-while yet, To-day,”.
The HOLY GHOST proclaims,
Hear what the SON OF GOD doth fay;
Whofe word-or faves or damns.

THIS Pfalm ftands in the front of a large catalogue of parallel ones, all evidently fuppofing, or exprefsly, as here, declaring and afcertaining, according to Rom. i. 4. the divine, eternal Sonship, character, and office of Jefus Chrift, the King of

glory,

glory, in his mediatorial kingdom of grace and truth; the blessedness of his faithful fubjects; and the utter deftruction of all his enemies, the unbelievers, who will not have him to reign over them. Luke xix 14. Acts iv. 25. and xiii. 33. Heb. i. and v.

Among many others, wherein the expreffion isvarious, but the fenfe undeniably the fame, the following Pfalms are parallel with this, and fet beyond all poffibility of controversy with regard to their fubject; as any one, who will be determined by the Holy Ghoft's public and infallible interpretation in the New Testament, may clearly perceive by reading them over, and confulting the marginal references as he goes along; viz. the two next, xvi. xviii. xx. xxi. xxii. xxiv. xxix. xlv. xlvi. xlvii. xlviii. 1. lx. lxi. lxiii. lxviii. lxxii. lxxxix. xci. xciii.. xcyi. xcvii. xcviii. xcix. cviii. cx. cxlv. and cxlix.

Meffiah rais'd again from death,
Declar'd the SON OF GOD

Kifs ye the Son-prevent his wrath-
Or feel his iron rod:

For thofe the Saviour who defpife,
And his falvation fcorn,

Exil'd for ever from the fkies,

Muft mourn in hell forlorn.

WHY rage and roar, like rolling feas

Against the folid fhore,

Thofe mad tumultuous enemies,

With fuch a fierce uproar?

They rife, and fwell, and foam their shame,
And fret themselves in vain ;

But fhall return, from whence they came,.
Into the deeps again:

Like gath'ring clouds the people low'r,

And plot confpiracies;

But fooner fhall the flying show'r
Diffolve th' empyreal skies,
