But, though his methods are unknown,
Judgment and truth support his throne.

3 Wait then, my soul—submissive wait,
Prostrate before his awful seat:
Amid the terrors of his rod,
Still trust a wise and gracious God.

C. M. 260 Bearing Shame for Christ.

* DIDST thou, dear Saviour, suffer shame,
And bear the cross for me?
And shall I fear to own thy name,
Orthy disciple be?

2 Inspire my soul with life divine,
And make me truly bold;
Let knowledge, faith, and meekness shine,
Nor love, nor zeal grow cold.

3 Let mockers scoff—the world defame,
And treat me with disdain;
Still may I glory in thy name,
And count reproach my gain.
4 To thee I cheerfully submit,
And all my powers resign;
Let wisdom point out what is fit,
And I’ll no more repine.
C. M.

261 Sincerity.

AM I an Israelite indeed,
Without a false disguise?

Have I renounced my sins, and left

The object I pursue?

APPEAR, great God, appear to me,
That, by myself abhorréd, - *

Ashamed I may forever be
Before my glorious Lord:

2 That sight alone can pride abase,
Can force me to submit,
Which makes archangels wail their face,
And tremble at thy feet!

- C. M. 263 Chiding ourselves for spiritual Sloth. MY drowsy powers: why sleep ye so? Awake, my sluggish soul! Nothing has half thy work to do, Yet nothing's half so dull.

2 We, for whom God the Son came down
And labored for our good—
How careless to secure that crown
He purchased with his blood!

4 Give us with active zeal to move, With vigorous souls to rise;

With hands of faith—and wings of love, To fly and take the prize.

C. M. 264 Deliverance from Sin desired.

OH may my heart, by grace renewed,
Be my Redeemer's throne;

And be my stubborn will subdued,
His rightful claim to own.

2 Let deep repentance, faith, and love,
* Be joined with godly fear;
And all my conversation prove
My heart to be sincere.

3 Preserve me safe from every sin,
Through my remaining days;
And let each virtue in me shine,
To my Redeemer's praise.
4 Let lively hope my soul inspire,
Let warm affections rise;
And may I wait with strong desire,
To mount above the skies.

265 C. M.

OH for a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free! -

A heart that's sprinkled with the blood
So freely shed for me!

2 Oh for a heart submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,
Where * reigns alone.

" 'Oh for an humble, contrite heart, Believing, true, and clean!

Which neither life, nor death, can part,
From him that dwells within.

4 Thy temper, gracious Lord, impart;
8. quickly from above;

Oh write thy name upon my heart—
Thy name, O God, is love.

AND dost thou say, “Ask what thou wilt?”
Lord, I would seize the golden hour—

I pray to be released from guilt,
And freed from sin’s polluting power.

2 More of thy presence, Lord, impart;

More of thine image let me bear: Erect thy throne within my heart, And reign without a rival there.

3 Give me to read my pardon sealed,
And from thy joy to draw my strength;
Oh be thy o love revealed
In all its height, and breadth, and length.

4 Grant these requests—I ask no more,
But to thy care the rest resign:
Sick, or in ... ". rich, or poor,
All shall be well, if thou art mine.

267 L. M.

Prayer for quickening Grace. COME, gracious Lord—descend and dwell By faith and love in every breast; Then shall we know, and taste, and feel The joys that cannot be expressed.

2 Come, fill our hearts with inward strength, make our enlarged souls possess,

And learn the height, and breadth, and length, Of thine eternal love and grace.

3 Now to the God whose power can do
More than our thoughts and wishes know,
Be everlasting honors done
By all the church, through Christ his Son.

268 S. M.

Prayer for quickening Grace.
BEHOLD the throne of grace!
The promise calls me near;
There Jesus shows a smiling face,
And waits to answer prayer.

2 Thine image, Lord, bestow,
Thy presence and thy love :
I ask to serve thee here below,
And reign with thee above.

3 Teach me to live by faith,
Conform my will to thine;
Let me victorious be in death,
And then in glory shine.

4 If thou these blessings give,
And wilt my portion be,
All worldly joys I’ll cheerful leave,
And find my heaven in thee.

269 C. M.

A calm and heavenly frame—

A # to shine upon the road
That leads me to the Lamb.
