Since thy beloved Son has died
To make that mercy sure!

[blocks in formation]

The Judgment anticipated.

WHEN thou, my righteous Judge, shalt
To fetch thy ransomed people home, [come
Shall I among them stand?
Shall such a worthless worm as I,
Who sometimes am afraid to die,
Be found at thy right hand?
2 I love to meet thy people now,
Before thy feet with them to bow,
Though vilest of them all;

But can I bear the piercing thought?
What if my name should be left out,
When thou for them shalt call?

3 O Lord, prevent it by thy grace—
Be thou my only hiding-place,
In this, th' accepted day;
Thy pardoning voice, oh let me hear,
To still my unbelieving fear,

Nor let me fall, I pray.

4 Among thy saints let me be found, Whene'er th' archangel's trump shall sound, To see thy smiling face;

Then loudest of the crowd I'll sing,
While heaven's resounding mansions ring
With shouts of sovereign grace.

[blocks in formation]

AND will the Judge descend?
And must the dead arise?

And not a single soul escape

His all-discerning eyes?

2 How will my heart endure The terrors of that day,

When earth and heaven, before his face,
Astonished, shrink away?

3 But ere the trumpet shakes
The mansions of the dead;
Hark! from the gospel's cheering sound
What joyful tidings spread!

4 Ye sinners, seek his grace,
Whose wrath ye cannot bear;
Flee to the shelter of his cross,
And find salvation there.

Banishment from God intolerable.
THAT awful day will surely come,
Th' appointed hour makes haste,
When I must stand before my Judge,
And pass the solemn test.

2 Thou lovely Chief of all my joys—
Thou Sovereign of my heart-
How could I bear to hear thy voice
Pronounce the word-" Depart!"

3 Oh! wretched state of deep despair,
To see my God remove,
And fix my doleful station where
I must not taste his love.

4 Oh! tell me that my worthless name
Is graven on thy hands;

Show me some promise in thy book,
Where my salvation stands.

Reward and Punishment.

OH where shall rest be found

Rest for the weary soul?

"Twere vain the ocean's depths to sound, Or pierce to either pole!

2 The world can never give
The bliss for which we sigh;
"Tis not the whole of life to live,
Nor all of death to die.

3 Beyond this vale of tears,
There is a life above,
Unmeasured by the flight of years;
And all that life is love.

4 There is a death, whose pang
Outlasts the fleeting breath:
Oh! what eternal horrors hang
Around "the second death!"
5 Thou God of truth and grace!
Teach us that death to shun;
Lest we be banished from thy face,
Forevermore undone.

The Sinner's Doom anticipated.

WHEN thy mortal life is fled,

When the death-shades o'er thee spread-
Thou hast finished earth's career-
Sinner-where wilt thou appear?

2 When the world has passed away,
When draws near the judgment day,
When the awful trump shall sound-
Say-oh where wilt thou be found?

3 When the Judge descends in light,
Clothed in majesty and might;
When the wicked quail with fear,
Where-oh where wilt thou appear?
4 What shall soothe thy bursting heart,
When the saints and thou must part
When the good with joy are crowned,
Sinner-where wilt thou be found?
5 While the Holy Ghost is nigh,
Quickly to the Saviour fly;
Then shall peace thy spirit cheer,
Then in heaven shalt thou appear.

HEAVEN.

C. M.

Holiness of Heaven.

NOR eye hath seen-nor ear hath heard,
Nor sense, nor reason known
What joys the Father has prepared

For those that love his Son.

2 But the good Spirit of the Lord
Reveals a heaven to come;
The beams of glory in his word
Allure and guide us home.

3 Pure are the joys above the sky,
And all the region peace;-
No wanton lips, nor envious eye
Can see or taste the bliss.

4 Those holy gates forever bar
Pollution, sin, and shame:

None shall obtain admittance there,
But followers of the Lamb.

The Heavenly Rest.

THERE is an hour of peaceful rest,
To mourning wanderers given:
There is a tear for souls distressed,
A balm for every wounded breast-
"Tis found alone-in heaven.

2 There is a home for weary souls,
By sins and sorrows driven;
When tossed on life's tempestuous shoals,
Where storms arise-and ocean rolls,
And all is drear-but heaven.

3 There faith lifts up the tearless eye,
The heart with anguish riven;
It views the tempest passing by,
Sees evening shadows quickly fly,
And all serene-in heaven.

4 There fragrant flowers immortal bloom,
And joys supreme are given;
There rays divine disperse the gloom;
Beyond the dark and narrow tomb
Appears the dawn-of heaven.

Longing for Heaven.

TO Jesus, the crown of my hope,
My soul is in haste to be gone:
Oh bear me, ye cherubim, up,
>And waft me away to his throne.
2 My Saviour, whom, absent, I love,
Whom, not having seen, I adore,
Whose name is exalted above
All glory, dominion, and power:
