Ev'ry eye shall now behold him,

Rob'd in dreadful majesty ;

Those who set at nought and sold him,
Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree,
Deeply wailing, shall the true Messiah see.
Ev'ry island, sea, and mountain.

Heaven and earth shall flee away;
All who hate him, must confounded
Hear the trump proclaim the day
Come to judgment ! come away!
Now redemption long expected,
See! in solemn pomp appear!
All his saints by man rejected,
Now shall meet him in the air!
Hallelujah! see the day of God appear!
Answer thine own bride and spirit,
Hasten, Lord, the genʼral doom!
The new heaven and earth t' inherit
Take thy pining exiles home;

All creation travails, groans, and bids

thee come!

Yea! Amen! Let all adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne!
Saviour, take the pow'r and glory:
Claim the kingdom for thine own!
O come quickly, hallelujah, come, Lord,
come!

455. A Cloud of Witnesses.

GIVE me the wings of faith, to rise
Within the vail, and see

The saints above, how great their joys,
How bright their glories be.

Once they were mourning here below,
And wet their couch with tears;
They wrestled hard, as we do now,
With sins, and doubts, and fears.
I ask them whence their vict'ry came?
They, with united breath,

Ascribe their conquest to the Lamb,
Their triumph to his death.

They mark'd the footsteps that he trod,
(His zeal inspir'd their breast :)
And following their incarnate God,
Possess'd the promis'd rest.

Our glorious Leader claims our praise
For his own pattern giv'n,

While the long cloud of witnesses

Shew the same path to heav'n.

456. Joys of Heaven.

COME, Lord, and warm each languid heart,
Inspire each lifeless tongue;
And let the joys of heav'n impart

Their influence to our song.

There on a throne (how dazzling bright!) Th' exalted Saviour shines;

And beams unspeakable delight

On all the heav'nly minds.

There shall the follow'rs of the Lamb
Join in immortal songs:

And endless honours to his name
Employ their tuneful tongues.

How will the wonders of his

In their full lustre shine;

grace

His wisdom, pow'r, and faithfulness,
All glorious! all divine!

But O their transports! O their songs!
What mortal thought can paint?

Transcendent glory awes our tongues,

And all our notes are faint.

Lord, tune our hearts to praise and love, Our feeble notes inspire;

'Till in thy blissful courts above We join the heav'nly choir.

Heaven anticipated.

ON Jordan's stormy banks I stand,
And cast a wishful eye

To Canaan's fair and happy land,
Where my possessions lie.

O the transporting, rapt'rous scene,
That rises to my sight!

Sweet fields array'd in living green,
And rivers of delight!

There gen'rous fruits that never fail,
On trees immortal grow;

There rocks and hills, and brooks and vales With milk and honey flow

All o'er those wide extended plains

Shines one eternal day;
There God the Son for ever reigns,
And scatters night away.

No chilling winds, or pois'nous breath,
Can reach that healthful shore:
Sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
Are felt and fear'd no more.

When shall I reach that happy place,
And be for ever blest?

When shall I see my Father's face,
And in his bosom rest?

Fill'd with delight, my raptur'd soul
Can here no longer stay:
Tho' Jordan's waves around me roll,
Fearless I'd launch away.

458. A Prospect of Heaven. THERE is a land of pure delight, Where saints immortal reign: Infinite day excludes the night, And pleasures banish pain. There everlasting spring abides, And never-with'ring flow'rs: Death, like a narrow sea, divides This heav'nly land from ours. Sweet fields beyond the swelling flood Stand dress'd in living green:

So to the Jews old Canaan stood,
While Jordan roll'd between.

But tim'rous mertals start and shrink
To cross this narrow sea;
And linger shiv'ring on the brink,
And fear to launch away.

Oh! could we make our doubts remove,
Those gloomy doubts that rise,

And see the Canaan that we love

With unbeclouded eyes!

Could we but climb where Moses stood, And view the landscape o'er,

Not Jordan's streams nor death's cold flood Should fright us from the shore.

[blocks in formation]

THERE is a land of living joy,
Beyond the utmost skies,
Where scenes of bliss without alloy
In boundless prospects rise.

High seated on a blazing throne
Th' eternal God appears,
Puts all his smiling glories on,

And awes at once, and cheers.

The slaughter'd Lamb at his right hand

Assumes his royal seat, Adoring angels round him stand,

His ministers of state.

Each breast with strong devotion glows, Love ev'ry heart inspires,
