God.-Ps. xix. 1.

heavens declare Thy glory, Lord; In every star Thy wisdom shines; But when our eyes behold Thy word, We read Thy name in fairer lines.

201 The power of God unto salvation.—

L

ROM. i. 16.

ET everlasting glories crown

Thy head, my Saviour and my Lord; Thy hands have brought salvation down, And writ the blessings in Thy word.

Round the whole earth, and never stand; 2 In vain the trembling conscience seeks

So, when Thy truth began its race,

It touched and glanced on every land.

3 Nor shall Thy spreading gospel rest

Till through the world Thy truth has run ;
Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light or feel the sun.

4 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise;
Bless the dark world with heavenly light;
Thy gospel makes the simple wise,
Thy laws are pure, Thy judgments right.

5 Thy noblest wonders here we view,
In souls renewed, in sins forgiven:
Lord, cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make Thy word my guide to heaven.
I. Watts.

Some solid ground to rest upon;
With long despair the spirit breaks,
Till we apply to Christ alone.

3 How well Thy blessed truths agree!
How wise and holy Thy commands !
Thy promises how firm they be !
How firm our hope and comfort stands !
4 Should all the forms that men devise
Assault my faith with treacherous art,
I'd call them vanity and lies,
And bind the Gospel to my heart.

I. Watts.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.-COL. iii. 16.

WORD of God incarnate,

O Wisdom from on high,

O Truth unchanged, unchanging,
O Light of our dark sky,
We praise Thee for the radiance
That from the hallowed page,
A lantern to our footsteps,
Shines on from age to age.

[blocks in formation]

3 It floateth like a banner
Before God's host unfurled;
It shineth like a beacon
Above the darkling world:
It is the chart and compass
That, o'er life's surging sea,
'Mid mists and rocks and quicksands
Still guide, O Christ, to Thee.

4 O make Thy Church, dear Saviour,
A lamp of burnished gold,
To bear before the nations
Thy true light as of old;
O teach Thy wandering pilgrims
By this their path to trace,
Till, clouds and darkness ended,
They see Thee face to face!

1 LA Our path when wont to stray;

I AMP of our feet, whereby we trace

Stream from the fount of heavenly grace,
Brook by the traveller's way:

2 Bread of our souls, whereon we feed,
True manna from on high;

Our guide and chart, wherein we read
Of realms beyond the sky :

3 Pillar of fire through watches dark,
And radiant cloud by day;

When waves would whelm our tossing bark,
Our anchor and our stay:

4 Word of the ever-living God,

Will of His glorious Son;
Without thee how could earth be trod,
Or heaven itself be won?

5 Lord, grant us all aright to learn
The wisdom it imparts;
And to its heavenly teaching turn
With simple, childlike hearts.

The commandment is a lamp; and

the law is light.-PROV. vi. 23.

And brings the truth to sight;
Spirit breathes upon the word,
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun:

It gives a light to every age;
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The hand that gave it still supplies
The gracious light and heat:
Its truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

f 4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine
For such a bright display

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love,
Till glory breaks upon my view
In brighter worlds above.

W. Cowper.
