a We mark the idolizing throng; Their cruel fondnefs blame;

Their children's fouls, we know they wrong And we may do the same.

3 In fpite of our refolves, we fear
Our own infirmity;

And tremble at the trial near,
And cry, O God, to thee!

4 Our only help in danger's hour,
Our only ftrength thou art;
Above the world and Satan's pow'r
And greater than our heart.

5 If on thy promis'd grace, alone,
We faithfully depend,

Thou furely wilt preferve thine own,
And keep them to the end.

6 Oh, make us tenderly difcreet,
To guard what thou haft giv'n?
Our children bring, with us, to meet
At thy right-hand in heav'n.

HYMN CCCXIV.

OW, Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft,
To whom we for our children cry!
The good, defir'd and wanted most,
Out of thy richest grace fupply!
The facred difcipline be giv'n,
To train and bring them up for heav'n.

2 Error and ignorance remove,

The blindness of their heart and mind; Give them the wisdom from above, Spotlefs, and peaceable, and kind;

In knowledge pure, their minds renew,
And give them thoughts divinely true,

3 Answer on them the end of all

Our cares, and pains, and studies here;
On them recover'd from their fall,
Stamp'd with the humble character!
Rais'd by the nurture of the Lord,
To all their paradife restor❜d.

4 Unite, what long has been disjoin'd,
Knowledge and vital piety;
Learning and holinels combin'd,

And truth, and love, let all men fee
In those whom up to thee we give,
Thine, wholly thine, to die and live.

5 Father accept them through thy Son,
And ever be thy Spirit guide!
Thy wisdom in their lives be fhown,
Thy name confefs'd and glorify'd;
Thy pow'r and love, diffus'd abroad;
And may they live and die for God.

HYMN CCCXV. L. M.

ASTER fupreme, I look to thee
For grace and wisdom from above!
Vefted with thine authority,
Endue me with thy patient love:

2 That taught, according to thy will,
To rule my family aright,

I may th' appointed charge fulfil,
With all my heart, and all my might.

3 Inferiors as a facred truft,

I from the fov'reign Lord receive,
That what is fuitable and juft,
Impartial, I to all may give :

4 O'erlook them with a guardian eye;
From vice and wickedness restrain :

Miftakes and leffer faults pafs by,
And govern with a gentle rein.

5 O Could I emulate the zeal

Thou doft to thy poor fervants bear! The troubles, griefs, and burdens feel, Of fouls intrufted to my care:

6 In daily pray❜r to God commend
The fouls whom Jefus dy'd to fave;
And think how foon my fway may end,
And all be equal in the grave.

HYMN CCCXVI.

AND my

house will serve thee, Lord:

But firft, obedient to thy word
Imuft myself appear:

By actions, words, and tempers show,
That I my heav'nly Mafter know,
And ferve with heart fincere.

2 I muft the good example fet
To thofe that on my pleasure wait;
The ftumbling-block remove :
Their duty by my life explain,
And ftill in all my works maintain
The dignity of love.

3 Easy to be entreated, mild,
Quickly appeas'd and reconcil'd
A foil'wer of my God;
A faint indeed I long to be,
And wish to lead my family
In the celestial road,

4 A finner fav'd myself, from fin;
I ftrive my family to win,
That they may be forgiv'n;

The children, Lord, and fervants blefs,
And through the paths of righteousness
Conduct us all to heav'n.

A Wedding Hymn.

INCE Jefus freely did appear
To grace a marriage-feaft;
O Lord, we ask thy prefence here,
To make a wedding-guest.

2 Upon the bridal pair look down,

Who now have plighted hands:
Their union with thy favour crown,
And blefs the nuptial hands.

3 With gifts of grace their hearts endow, Of all rich dowries beft!

Their fubftance blefs, and peace beflow,
To fweeten all the reft.

4 In pureft love their fouls unite,
That they with chriftian care,
May make domeftic burdens light,
By taking each their share.

5 True helpers may they prove indeed,
In pray'r, and faith, and hope:
And fee, with joy, a godly feed,
To build their household up:

6 As Ifaac and Rebecca, give

A pattern chafte and kind;
So may this marry'd couple live,
And die in friendship join'd.

7 On ev'ry foul affembled here,
O make thy face to fhine;
Thy goodness more our hearts can cheer
Than richeft food or wine.

HYMN CCCXVIII. L. M.

SE

For a fick Perfon.

EE, gracious Lord, with pitying eyes,
Beneath thy hand a fuff'rer lies,
Thy mercy; not thine anger, proves;
And fick is he whom Jefus loves.

2 His, to thine own afflictions, join,
Accept, exalt and call them thine:
Thy paffion, which remains, fulfil,
And fuffer in thy members ftill.

3 His fickness feel, endure his pain,
His burden bear, his crofofuftain:
Grieve in his griefs, and figh his fighs,
And breathe his wishes to the fkies.

4 Enter his heart, poffefs him whole, Infpire and actuate his foul; Timfelf, no longer let it be

hat fuffers, or that lives, but thee,
