What is it keeps me back,
From which I cannot part?
Which will not let my Saviour take
Poffeffion of my heart?

Some wicked thing unknown
Muft furely lurk within;

Some idol, which I will not own,
Some fecret, bosom fin.

Jefus, the hind'rance show,
Which I have fear'd to fee;
O may I now confent to know

What keeps me out of thee!
Searcher of hearts, in mine
Thy trying pow'r display:
Into its darkest corner fhine,
And take the veil away!

I now believe, in thee
Compaffion reigns alone :

According to my faith, to me

O let it, Lord, be done!
In me is all the bar,

Which thou would't fain removė;
Remove it, and I fhall declare,

That God is only love.

HYMN XXII.

ATHER of Jefus Chrift, the just,
My Friend and Advocate with thee;

Pity a foul, that fain would truft

In him, who liv'd and dy'd for me:
But only thou canft make him known,
And in my heart reveal thy Son.

2 If, drawn by thine alluring grace, My want of living faith I feel; Show me in Chrift thy fmiling face,

What flesh and blood can ne'er reveal ; Thy co-eternal Son display,

And turn my darkness into day.

3 The gift unfpeakable impart ;

I

Command the light of grace to shine;
To shine in my dark drooping heart,
And fill me with the life divine:
Now bid the new creation be!
O God, let there be faith in me !

HYMN XXIII.

JESUS my hope, for me offer'd up,
Who madly purfu'd thee to Calvary's

top:

The blood thou haft fhed, for me let it plead,
And fay thou haft dy'd in thy murderer's ftead.
2 Now, now let me know, its virtue below!
O wash me, and I shall be whiter than fnow!
O hallow my heart, and fully convert,

And make meO Lord, in the world as thou art.
3 Each moment apply'd, my weakness to hide,
Thy blood be upon me, and always abide :
My Advocate prove, with th' Father above,
And speak me at last to the throne of thy love.

HYMN XXIV.

OME, holy celeftial Dove,
To vifit a forrowful breaft;

My burden of guilt to remove,
And bring me affurance and reft!

Thou only, haft pow'r to relieve

A finner o'erwhelm'd with his load: The fenfe of acceptance to give,

And sprinkle his heart with thy blood!

2 With me if of old thou haft ftrove,
And strangely withheld me from fin;
And try'd by the lure of thy love,
My worthlefs affections to win;
The work of thy mercy revive,
Thy uttermoft mercy exert,
And kindly continue to ftrive,
And hold, till I yield thee my heart.

3 Thy call, if I ever have known,

And figh'd from myself to get free;
And groan'd the unfpeakable groan,
And long'd to be happy in thee;
Fulfil the imperfect defire;

Thy peace to my conscience reveal,
The fenfe of thy favour inspire,
And give me my pardon to feel.

4 If when I had put thee to grief,
And madly to folly return'd,
Thy pity hath been my relief,
And lifted me up as I mourn'd!
Moft pityful Spirit of grace,
Relieve me again, and restore :
My fpirit in holiness raife,

To fall and to fuffer no more!

If now I lament after God,

And pant for a drop of his love,
If Jefus hath bought thee with blood,
For me to receive from above:

I

Come, heavenly Comforter, come !
True witness of mercy divine,
And make me thy permanent home,
And feal me eternally thine!

HYMN XXV. L. M.

STAY, thou infulted Spiritch

Tho' I have done thee fuch defpite,
Nor caft the finner quite away,
Nor take thine everlasting flight.

2 Tho' I have fteel'd my ftubborn heart,
And fhaken off my guilty fears,
And vex'd, and urg'd thee to depart,
For many days, and months, and years:

3 Though I have most unfaithful been,
Of all who e'er thy grace receiv'd,
Ten thousand times thy goodness seen,
Ten thousand times thy goodness griev'd :

4 Yet, O! the chief of finners spare,

In honor of my great High-Prieft;
Nor in thy righteous anger fwear
T'exclude me from thy people's reft

5 If yet thou canft my fins forgive,
From now, O Lord, relieve my woes,
Into thy reft of love receive,

And bless me with the calm repose.
6 From now my weary foul release,
Up-raife me with thy gracious hand,
And guide into thy perfect peace,
And bring me to the promis'd land.

HYMN XXVI.

EARY of wand'ring from my God,
And now made willing to return,

I hear and bow me to the rod :

For thee, not without hope I mourn; I have an Advocate above,

A Friend before the throne of love.

2 O Jefus, full of truth and grace! More full of grace than I of fin, Yet once again I seek thy face,

Open thine arms, and take me in;
And freely my backflidings heal,
And love the faithlefs finner ftill.

3 Thou know'it the way to bring me back,
My fallen spirit to restore :
O, for thy truth and mercy's fake,
Forgive, and bid me fin no more!
The ruins of my foul repair,

And make my heart a house of pray'r.

4 Ah! give me, Lord, the tender heart, That trembles at th approach of fin: A godly fear of fin impart;

I

Implant and root it deep within!
That I may dread thy gracious pow'r,

And never dare t' offend thee more.

HYMN XXVII.

O the haven of thy breast,
O Son of man, I fly,

T%

Be my refuge and my reft,
For O! the ftorm is high!
