vileness of fin, and the excellency of holiness, may not be readily conceived by fuch as have made little or no experiments of this nature. But let us be allowed to recommend this excellent way which our pious forefathers pursued, and in which the persons, whofe tranfactions of this kind we have now published, experienced it may be both unspeakable pleafure and advantage in their Christian progress.

Thefe obfervations we have judged proper to annex to the preceding Memoirs; and at the fame time cannot help remarking how correfpondent the the experiences, which the foregoing fheets contain, are to the experiences of the people of God recorded in fcripture, and especially to those in the Pfalms: and we fcruple not to say, that if to be humbled for fin, and deeply to resent and bewail it; if to fly to the covenant-love and mercy of God in Christ Jefus for pardon; if to rely upon and plead the influences of the bleffed fpirit for growing holiness and preparation for heaven; that if frequently to wait upon God in the duties of his worship, public and private; that if to infpect our own hearts and lives, and often call ourfelves to the tribunal of confcience, and examine whether our works are wrought in God; that if to ftir up ourfelves to lay hold upon God, to delight ourselves in him, to triumph in the Redeemer's righteoufnefs and grace; and that if to obey the Almighty as our fovereign, and to enjoy him as our portion; we fcruple not to say, that if these, or any fuch like exercises of foul, be

termed legality, or enthufiafm, or by any other reproachful name, we truft we shall, notwithstanding thefe cenfures, approve, recommend, and practife according to such a method, and by fuch maxims, as we fee the cloud (the gathering and increafing cloud) of witneffes that are gone before us acted in this manner; and as we are well fatisfied that this is the way which scripture has pointed out to the heavenly inheritance and glory.* Strive to enter in at the firait gate.- + Work out your own falvation with fear and trembling, for it is Ged that works in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. - Give diligence to make your calling and election fure. Be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace without fpot and blameless.-There is therefore no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jefus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit.

For they that are after the fleb, do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the fpirit, the things of the fpirit. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be fpiritually minded is life and peace. ¶And without holiness no man shall fee the Lord.
