I too, at the season ordain'd,
Their chorus for ever shall join,
And love, and adore, without end,
Their faithful Creator, and mine.

HYMN 7.

O LORD, another day is flown.
And we, a lonely band,

Are met once more before Thy throne,
To bless Thy fost'ring hand.

And wilt Thou lend a list'ning ear

To praises low as ours?

Thou wilt

The song

for Thou dost love to hear
which meekness pours.

O let Thy grace perform its part,

And let contention cease; And shed abroad in every heart, Thine everlasting peace!

Thus chasten'd, cleans'd, entirely Thine,

A flock by Jesus led ;

The Sun of Holiness shall shine

In glory on our head.

And Thou wilt turn our wand'ring feet,

And Thou wilt bless our way;

Till worlds shall fade, and faith shall greet The dawn of lasting day.

CHRISTMAS DAY.

HYMN 8.

ANGELS from the realms of glory,
Wing your flight o'er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation's story,
Now proclaim Messiah's birth :
Come, and worship as ye sing,
Worship Christ, the new-born King.

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,
Watching o'er your flocks by night,
God with man is now residing,
Yonder shines the infant light:
Come and worship, &c.

Saints, before the altar bending,
Watching long with hope and fear;
Suddenly the Lord descending,
In His temple should appear :
Come and worship, &c.

Sinners, wrung with true repentance,
Doom'd, for guilt, to endless pain;

Justice now revokes the sentence,

Mercy calls you, break your Come and worship, &c.

HYMN 9.

chains :

BRIGHTEST, and best of the sons of the morning, Dawn on our darkness, and lend us Thine aid!

Star of the east, the horizon adorning,

Guide where our infant Redeemer is laid.

Cold on His cradle the dew-drops are shining; Low lies His bed with the beasts of the stall; Angels adore Him, in slumber reclining,

Maker, and Monarch, and Saviour of all !

Say, shall we yield Him, in costly devotion,
Odours of Eden, and off'rings divine ;
Gems of the mountain, and pearls of the ocean,
Myrrh from the forest, and gold from the mine?

Vainly we offer each ample oblation,

Vainly with gifts would His favour secure ; Richer, by far, is the heart's adoration,

Dearer to God are the prayers of the poor.

HYMN 10.

HARK the glad sound! the Saviour comes !
The Saviour promis'd long!

Let ev'ry heart exult in praise,
And ev'ry voice in song.

On Him the Spirit largely pour'd,

Exerts its sacred fire ;

Wisdom and might, and zeal and love,
His holy breast inspire.

He comes, the pris'ners to release,

In Satan's bondage held :

To Him the gates of brass give way,
The iron fetters yield.

He comes, the broken heart to bind,
To make the wounded whole;
And with the treasures of His grace,
To bless the contrite soul.

Our glad Hosannas, Prince of Peace,
Thy welcome shall proclaim;
And heav'ns eternal arches ring
With glories of Thy name.

HYMN 11.

HARK! what mean those holy voices, Sweetly sounding through the skies? Lo! the angelic host rejoices : Heavenly hallelujahs rise.

Listen to the wondrous story

66

Which they chant in hymns of joy :

Glory in the highest, glory!

Glory be to God most High.

"Peace on earth, good-will from heaven,
Reaching far as man is found;
Souls redeem'd, and sins forgiven :-
Loud our golden harps shall sound.

"Christ is born, the great Anointed;
Heaven and earth His praises sing!
O receive whom God appointed,

66

For your Prophet, Priest, and King!

Hasten, mortals, to adore Him ; Learn His name, and taste His joy; Till in heaven ye sing before Him, Glory be to God most High!"

HYMN 12.

HARK! the herald-angels sing,
Glory to the new-born King;

C

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconcil'd.
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th' angelic hosts proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Christ, by highest heaven ador'd ;
Christ, the everlasting Lord;
Late in time behold Him come,
Offspring of a Virgin's womb :
Veil'd in flesh, the Godhead see;
Hail th' Incarnate Deity!

Pleas'd as Man with men t' appear,

Jesus, our Immanuel here.

Hail the heav'n-born Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,
Ris'n with healing in His wings:
Mild He lays His glory by;
Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.

;

Come desire of nations, come,
Fix in us Thy humble home :
Rise, the woman's conquering seed,
Bruise in us the serpent's head:
Adam's likeness now efface,

Stamp Thine image in its place;
Second Adam from above,

Reinstate us in Thy love.
