The joys of unity to prove,
The paradise of perfect love.

Portugal.] HYMN 152. L. M.

1 UTHOR of faith, we seek thy face,

A For all who feel thy work begun
Confirm, and strengthen them in grace,
And bring thy feeblest children on.

2 Thou seest their wants, thou know'st their names,

Be mindful of thy youngest care;
Be tender of the new-born lambs,
And gently in thy bosom bear.
3 The lion roaring for his prey,

With ravening wolves on every side,
Watch over them to tear and slay,
If found one moment from their Guide.

4 Satan his thousand arts essays,

His agents all their powers employ,
To blast the blooming work of grace,
The heavenly offspring to destroy.
5 Baffle the crooked serpent's skill,

And turn his sharpest darts aside :
Hide from their eyes the dev'lish ill,

O save them from the demon, pride!

6 In safety lead thy little flock,

From hell, the world, and sin secure :
And set their feet upon the rock,

And make in thee their goings sure.

PRAYER AND WATCHFULNESS.

Devotion.] HYMN 153. C. M.

1 I WANT a principle within,

Of jealous godly fear;

A sensibility of sin,

A pain to feel it near;
I want the first approach to feel,
Of pride, or fond desire;

To catch the wand'ring of my will,
And quench the kindling fire.

2 From thee that I no more may part,
No more thy goodness grieve,
The filial awe, the fleshly heart,
The tender conscience give.
Quick as the apple of an eye,
O God, my conscience make!
Awake my soul when sin is nigh,
And keep it still awake.

3 If to the right or left I stray,

That moment, Lord, reprove;
And let me weep my life away,
For having griev'd thy love.
O may the least omission pain,
My well-instructed soul!
And drive me to the blood again,
Which makes the wounded whole.

Kentucky.] HYMN 154. S. M.

THE praying spirit breathe,
The watching power impart;

From all entanglements beneath
Call off my peaceful heart;

2

1

My feeble mind sustain,

By worldly thoughts opprest;
Appear, and bid me turn again
To my eternal rest.

Swift to my rescue come,

Thine own this moment seize,
Gather my wand'ring spirit home,
And keep in perfect peace:
Suffer'd no more to rove
O'er all the earth abroad,
Arrest the pris'ner of thy love,
And shut me up in God.

HYMN 155. C. M.

HEPHERD divine, our wants relieve,
In this our evil day;

To all thy tempted followers give
The power to watch and pray.

2 Long as our fiery trials last,
Long as the cross we bear,

O let our souls on thee be cast
In never-ceasing prayer!

3 The spirit of interceding grace,
Give us in faith to claim;
To wrestle till we see thy face,
And know thy hidden name.

4 Till thou thy perfect love impart,
Till thou thyself bestow;
Be this the cry of every heart,
I will not let thee go.

5 I will not let thee go unless

Thou tell thy name to me;
With all thy great salvation bless;
And make me all like thee.
G

6 Then let me on the mountain top Behold thy open face;

Where faith in sight is swallow'd up,
And prayer in endless praise.

Matthias.] HYMN 156. S. M.

JESUS, my strength, my hope,

thee I cast my care,

With humble confidence look up,
And know thou hear'st my prayer.
Give me on thee to wait,

Till I can all things do,
On thee, almighty to create,
Almighty to renew.

I want a sober mind,

A self-renouncing will,

That tramples down, and casts behind,
The baits of pleasing ill.

A soul inur'd to pain,

To hardship, grief, and loss:
Bold to take up, firm to sustain,

The consecrated cross.

I want a godly fear,

A quick discerning eye,

That looks to thee when sin is near,
And sees the tempter fly;

A spirit still prepar'd,

And arm'd with jealous care,
For ever standing on its guard,
And watching unto prayer.

I want a heart to pray,
To pray and never cease,
Never to murmur at thy stay,
Or wish my, sufferings less.
This blessing, above all,
Always to pray I want,

6

Out of the deep on thee to call,
And never, never faint.

I want a true regard,

A single, steady aim,

Unmov'd by threat'ning or reward,
To thee and thy great name;
A jealous, just concern

For thine immortal praise;
A pure desire that all may learn,
And glorify thy grace.

I rest upon thy word,

The promise is for me;

My succour and salvation, Lord,

Shall surely come from thee;
But let me still abide,

Nor from my hope remove,
Till thou my patient spirit guide,
Into thy perfect love.

Willowby.] HYMN 157. 48's & 26's.

H and still my tempted soul stand by,

ELP, Lord, to whom for help I fly,

Throughout the evil day;

The sacred watchfulness impart,
And keep the issues of my heart,
And stir me up to pray.

2 My soul with thy whole armour arm,
In each approach of sin alarm,
And show the danger near:
Surround, sustain, and strengthen me,
And fill with godly jealousy,

And sanctifying fear.

3 Whene'er my careless hands hang down, O let me see thy gathering frown, And feel thy warning eye;
