Thither may we repair,
That glorious bliss to share!
We shall see the welcome day,
We shall to the summons bow:
Come, Redeemer, come away:
Now prepare, and take us now!

St. Anns.] HYMN 570. C. M.

VA

"AIN man, thy fond pursuits forbear;
Repent, thy end is nigh:

Death at the farthest can't be far:
O! think before thou die.

2 Reflect; thou hast a soul to save;
Thy sins, how high they mount!
What are thy hopes beyond the grave?
How stands that dark account?

3 Death enters, and there's no defence;
His time there's none can tell ;
He'll in a moment call thee hence,
To heaven, or down to hell.

4 Thy flesh, perhaps thy greatest care,
Shall crawling worms consume:
But ah! destruction stops not there;
Sin kills beyond the tomb.

ON THE DEATH OF A CHILD.

Paradise.] HYMN 571. C. M.

1 TWith transport all divine;

HY life I read, my gracious Lord,

Thine image trace in every word,
Thy love in every line.

2 Methinks I see a thousand charms
Spread o'er thy lovely face,
While infants in thy tender arms
Receive the smiling grace.

3 "I take these little lambs," said he,
"And lay them in my breast;
Protection they shall find in me,
In me be ever blest.

4" Death may the bands of life unloose,
But can't dissolve my love:
Millions of infant souls compose

The family above.

"Their feeble frames my pow'r shall raise,
And mould with heavenly skill;
I'll give them tongues to sing my praise,
And hands to do my will."

6 His words the happy parents hear,
And shout with joys divine;

O Saviour, all we have and are
Shall be for ever thine.

DESCRIBING JUDGMENT.

Aylesbury.

HYMN 572. S. M.

1 Before whose bar severe,

HOU Judge of quick and dead,

2

With holy joy or guilty dread

We all shall soon appear;
Our caution'd souls prepare
For that tremendous day,
And fill us now with watchful care,

And stir us up to pray:

To pray and wait the hour,
That awful hour unknown,

When rob'd in majesty and power,
Thou shalt from heaven come down,

Th' immortal Son of man,

To judge the human race,

With all thy Father's dazzling train,
With all thy glorious grace.

To damp our earthly joys,

T" increase our gracious fears,
For ever let th' archangel's voice
Be sounding in our ears;
The solemn midnight cry,
"Ye dead, the Judge is come;
Arise, and meet him in the sky,
And meet your instant doom!"
O may we thus be found
Obedient to thy word,
Attentive to the trumpet's sound,
And looking for our Lord!
O may we all ensure

A lot among the blest:

And watch a moment to secure

An everlasting rest.

Last Day.] HYMN 573. P. M.

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors]

Thousand thousand saints attending,
Swell the triumph of his train!

Hallelujah!

God appears on earth to reign.

2 Every eye shall now behold him,
Rob'd in dreadful majesty !

Those who set at nought and sold him,
Pierc'd and nail'd him to the tree,
Deeply wailing,

Shall the true Messiah see.

3 The dear tokens of his passion, Still his dazzling body bears;

Cause of endless exultation

To his ransom'd worshippers!
With what rapture

Gaze we on those glorious scars!
4 Yea, Amen! let all adore thee,
High on thine eternal throne!
Saviour, take the power and glory,
Claim the kingdom for thine own!
Jah Jehovah!

Everlasting God, come down!
Judgment.] HYMN 574. L. M.

1

HThe seventh trumpet speaks him near

E comes! He comes! the Judge severe;

His lightnings flash, his thunders roll;
How welcome to the faithful soul!

2 From heaven angelic voices sound,
See the almighty Jesus crown'd!
Girt with omnipotence and grace,
And glory decks the Saviour's face.
3 Descending on his azure throne,
He claims the kingdoms for his own;
The kingdoms all obey his word,
And hail him their triumphant Lord!
4 Shout, all the people of the sky,
And all the saints of the Most High;
Our Lord, who now his right obtains,
For ever and for ever reigns.

Rochdale.] HYMN 575. P. M.

HOU God of glorious majesty,
To thee against myself, to thee,

A worm of earth, I cry!
A half-awaken'd child of man,
An heir of endless bliss or pain,

A sinner born to die!

2 Lo! on a narrow neck of land,
'Twixt two unbounded seas I stand
Secure, insensible :

[ocr errors]

A point of time, a moment's space,
Removes me to that heavenly place,
Or shuts me up in hell.

3 O God, mine inmost soul convert,
And deeply on my thoughtful heart
Eternal things impress:

Give me to feel their solemn weight,
And tremble on the brink of fate,
And wake to righteousness!

4 Before me place in dread array,
The pomp of that tremendous day,
When thou with clouds shalt come,
To judge the nations at thy bar;
And tell me, Lord, shall I be there
To meet a joyful doom?

5 Be this my one great bus'ness here,
With serious industry and fear
Eternal bliss t' ensure;
Thine utmost counsel to fulfil,
And suffer all thy righteous will,
And to the end endure.

6 Then, Saviour, then my soul receive,
Transported from this vale to live,
And reign with thee above!
Where faith is sweetly lost in sight,
And hope in full supreme delight,
And everlasting love.

Clarks.] HYMN 576. 7's, 6's, & 18.

STAND

TAND th' omnipotent decree!
Jehovah's will be done!

Nature's end we wait to see,
And hear her final groan;
