ESTHER, CHAP. VIII.

s Then Esther the queen answered and said, If I have found favour in thy sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request:

the place of the banquet of wine; and Haman was fallen upon the bed whereon Esther was.

Then said the king, Will he force the queen also before ine in the house? As the word went out of the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.

4 For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to perish: but 9 And Harbonah, one of if we had been sold for bond- the chamberlains, said before men and bondwomen, I had the king, Behold also, the held my tongue, although the enemy could not countervail the king's damage.

5 Then the king Ahasuerus answered and said unto Esther the queen, Who is he, and where is he, that durst presume in his heart to do so?

6 And Esther said, The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman. Then Haman was afraid before the king and the queen.

7 And the king, arising from the banquet of wine in his wrath, went into the palace-garden: and Haman stood up to make request for his life to Esther the queen; for he saw that there was evil determined against him by the king.

8 Then the king returned out of the palace-garden into

10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then was the king's wrath pacified.

CHAP. VIII.

ON that day did the king

Ahasuerus give the house of Haman, the Jews' enemy, unto Esther the queen: and Mordecai came before the king; for Esther had told what he was unto her.

וַתַּעַן אֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה וַתּאמַר אִם־מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֶיךְ 5 הַמֶּלֶךְ וְאִם־עַל־הַמֶּלֶךְ טוֹב תִּנָּתֵן לִי נַפְשִׁי בִּשְׁאֵלָתִי וְעַמִּי בְּבַקְשָׁתִי: כִּי נִמְכַּרְנוּ אֲנִי וְעַמִּי לְהַיָּמִיד 4 להֲרוֹג וּלְאַבֵּד וְאִלוּ לַעֲבָדִים וְלִשְׁפָחוֹת נִמְכַּרְנוּ הֶחֱרַשְׁתִּי כִּי אֵין הַצָר שׁוֶה בְּנֶזֶק הַמֶּלֶךְ: וַיֹּאמֶרה הַמֶּלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁוֵרֹוֹשׁ וַיֹּאמֶר לְאֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה מִי הוּא זֶה וְאֵי־זֶה הוֹא אֲשֶׁר־מְלָאוֹ לִבּוֹ לַעֲשׂוֹת בֶּן: וַתֹּאמֶר 6 אֶסְתֵּר אֵישׁ צַר וְאוֹיֵב הָמָן הָרָע הַזֶּה וְהָמֶן נִבְעַת מִלָּפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ וְהַמַּלְכָּה: וְהַמֶּלֶךְ קָם בַּחֲמָתוֹ מִמִּשְׁתֵּה ד הַיַּיִן אֶל־בְּגַת הַבִּיתָן וְהָמָן עָמַד לְבַקְשׁ עַל־נַפְשׁוֹ מֵאֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה כִּי רָאָה כִּי־כָלְתָה אֵלָיו הָרָעָה מֵאֵת הַמֶּלֶךְ : וְהַמֶּלֶךְ שָׁב מִגְנַּת הַבִּיתָן אֶל־בֵּית 8

מִשְׁתֵּה הַיַּיִן וְהָמָן נפַל עַל־הַמְטָה אֲשֶׁר אֶסְתֵּרְעָלִיהָ ג וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ הגם לִכְבְּוֹש אֶת־הַמַּלְכָּה עַמִּי בַּבָּיִת

הַדָּבָר יָצָא מִפִּי הַמֶּלֶךְ וּפְנֵי הָמָן חָפוּ : וַיֹּאמֶר 9 ; חַרְבוֹנָה אֶחָד מִן־הַסָרִיסִים לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ בָּם הִנֵּה־

הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה הָמָן לְמָרְדְּכַי אֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר־טְוֹב עַל־הַמֶּלֶךְ עֹמֵד בְּבֵית הָמָן אֶבְהַ חֲמִשִׁים אַמָּה וַיֹּאמֶר

הַמֶּלֶךְ תִּלְהוּ עָלָיו: וַיִּתְלוּ אֶת־הָמָן עַל־הָעֵץ אֲשֶׁר־ ה הֵכִין לְמָרְדְּבִי וַחֲמַת הַמֶּלֶךְ שָׁכָכָה : * בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא נ

נָתַן המלֶךְ אֲחַשְׁוֵרוֹשׁ לְאֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה אֶת־בֵּית הָמָן צרֵר הַיְהוּדִים וּמָרְדְּכַי בָּא לִפְנֵי הַמֶּלֶךְ כִּי־הִגִּידָה אֶסְתֵּר מָה־הוּא־לָהּ: וַיָּסַר הַמֶּלֶךְ אֶת־טַבַּעְתּוֹ אֲשֶׁר :

אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הַמֶּלֶךְ חָפץבִּיקָרוֹ: יָבִיאוּ לְבוּשׁ מַלְכות 8 אֲשֶׁר לָבַשׁ־בּוֹ הַמֶּלֶךְ וְסוּס אֲשֶׁר רָכָב עָלָיו הַמֶּלֶךְ וַאֲשֶׁר נִתַּן כֶּתֶר מַלְכוּת בְּרֹאשְׁוֹ : וְנָתוֹן הַלְבוּש 9 וְהַשׂוּס עַל יַד־אִישׁ מִעָרֵי המלֶךְ הַפַּרְתְּמים וְהלבשו אֶת־הָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הַמֶּלֶךְ חָפֵץ בִּיקָרוֹ וְהִרְכִּיבֵהוּ עַל־ הסוס בִּרְחֹוֹב הָעִיר וְקָרְאוּ לְפָנָיו כָּכָה יֵעָשֶׂה לָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר הַמֶּלֶךְ חָפֵץ בִּיקָרוֹ: וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ לְהָמָן מַהֵר קח אֶת־הַלְבוּשׁ וְאֶת־הָסוּט כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ וַעֲשֶׂהכֵן לְמָרְדְּכַי הַיְהוּדִי הַיֹּשֵׁב בְּשַׁעַר הַמֶּלֶךְ אַל־תַּכֵּל דָּבָר מִכֹּל אֲשֶׁר דִּבַּרְתָּ : וַיִּקְח הָמָן אֶת־הַלְבִוּשׁ 11 וְאֶת־הָסוּס וַיִּלְבַּשׁ אֶת־מַרְדְּכַי וַיִּרְכִּיבֵהוּ בִּרְחוֹב הָעִיר וַיִּקְרָא לְפָנָיו כָּכָה יֵעָשֶׂה לָאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר דמלךְ חָפֵץ בִּיקָרוֹ: וַיָּשָׁב מָרְדְּכַי אֶל־שַׁעַר המלוּ וְהָמָן 12 נִדְסֵף אֶל־בֵּיתוֹ אָבֵל וַחֲפוּ רֹאשׁ: וַיְסַפֶר הָמָן 19 לזרש אִשְׁתּוֹ וּלְכָל־אֹהֲבָיו אֵת כָּל־אֲשֶׁר קָרָהוּ וַיֹּאמְרוּ לוֹ חֲכָמִין וֶזֶרֶשׁ אִשְׁתּוֹ אֵם מַזֶּרַע הַיְהוּדִים מִרְדְּכַי אֲשֶׁר הַחַלּוֹת לִנְכֹּל לְפָנָיו לֹא־תוֹכָל לוֹ כִּי־ נָפוֹל תִּפּוֹל לְפָנָיו: עוֹדָם מְדַבְּרִים עֲמֹוֹ וְסָרִיסִי הַמֶּלֶךְ 14

הִגִּיעוּ וַיַבְהִלוּ לְהָבִיא אֶת־הָמָן אֶל־הַמִּשְׁתֶּה אֲשֶׁר־ : עֶשְׂתָה אֶסְתֵּר : וַיָּבֵא הַמֶּלֶךְ וְהָמָן לִשְׁתּוֹת עִם־ו ; אֶסְתֵּר הַבַּלְבָּה: וַיֹּאמֶר הַמֶּלֶךְ לְאֶסְתֵּר בֶּס בַּיוֹם 2

הַאֲנִי בְּמִשְׁתֵּה הַיַּיִן מַה־שְׁאֵלָתֵךְ אֶסְתֵּר הַמַּלְכָּה וְהִנָּתֵן לִךְ וּמַה־בַּקְשְׁתֵךְ עַד־חֲצִי הַמַלְכוֹת וְתֵעָשׂ :

the king had promoted him, That Mordecai had told of and how he had advanced Bigthana and Teresh, two of him above the princes and the king's chamberlains, the servants of the king.. keepers of the door, who sought to lay hand on the king Ahasuerus.

12 Haman said moreover, Yea, Esther the queen did let no man come in with the king unto the banquest that she had prepared but myself; and to-morrow am I invited unto her also with the king.

13 Yet all this availeth me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate.

14 Then said Zeresh his wife and all his friends unto him, Let a gallows be made of fifty cubits high, and tomorrow speak thou unto the king that Mordecai may be hanged thereon: then go thou in merrily with the king unto the banquet. And the thing pleased Haman; and he caused the gallows to be made.

CHAP. VI.

N that night could not the king sleep; and he commanded to bring the book of records of the Chronicles; and they were read before the king.

2 And it was found written,

3 And the king said, What honour and dignity hath been done to Mordecai for this?. Then said the king's servants that ministered unto him, There is nothing done for him.

4 And the king said, Who is in the court? (Now Haman was come into the outward court of the king's house, to speak unto the king to hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.)

5 And the king's servants said unto him, Behold, Haman standeth in the court. And the king said, Let him come in.

6 So Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? (Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself?)

7 And Haman answered the king, For the
