*. It is needless, I think, to alter here, as also in ver. 13, the expression, the land of the giants, which it has been proved should be, the country of Rephaim, and of the remnant of Rephaim, it being in material.

It is the opinion of Nachmanides, that he was called king of the Amorites, becanse he reigned over them, but he himself was of the Rephaim, i. e. giants :- and in order to give us a proper idea of his extraordinary height, it is mentioned that liis bedstead was of iron, as none else was able to bear him, and which is still in Rabbath, which was his dwelling-place; and when the children of Ammon destroyed the giants he only escaped, as already mentioned: but his bedstead continued there, and was preserved by the children of Ammon as a trophy of their conquest, over so great and powerful a monarch; and this is what is meant by the word behold, i.e. here is a witness and proof of the truth of the matter.

Moses here narrates the distribution he hath made of the land which he had taken. Ic this verse he telleth us what he had given to the Reubenite and Gaddite; and in ver. 13 and

• This seems to be a digression quite foreign from the purpose, but is introduced here to inform them, that, notwithstanding Abraham's and Isaac's covenant with Abimelech; king of the Philistines, (vide Genesis, chap. xxi. vér, 32,) they were at liberty to subdue them, as that nation to whom they had sworn peace were the Avim, but that the present inhabitants of that country were the Chaptorim..

$ This being a narrative of what was past, no imperative present can have place here, but it must be rendered the same as ver, 13%

The wilderness of Kedemoth is not taken notice of in Numbers, chap. xxxiii unless it be there called by another name.

| The parenthesis, in the beginning of this verse is very properly placed, as it is no part of the message; which finishes with the last words in this verse, after the parenthesis, viz. until I shall pass moer, &c. But this beginning is a narrative of the result thereof, as is usual in Scripture. Vide the observations on Exodus, chap. xxxii, ver, 28.

This refers to the end of the parenthesis in last verse, meaning that, as Esau and Moab did unto me, so did Sihon.
