He likewise rehearsed all the commandments unto them, some of which he explained more at large, and others he particularly admonished them of; he also mentioned some which he had not penned at the time that he received them from God. Hence the greatest part of this book is taken up with reproof and admonition, particularly in regard of the love which maxkind onght to bear to God, as well as one man to another; the abstaining from idolatry and cleaving to God, and his Law; these things cannot be too often inculcated, and this is what is meant by the expression, “ And these are the words which Moses spake unto all Israel, an this side Jordan in the wilderness,” for he reproved them for what they did in Jhe wilderness, as mentioned, Psalm. lxxviii. ver. 40. “How often did they provoke him in the wilderness, Thus did he admonish them of all the crimes which their parents bad-beeu guilty of, in order to deter them therefrom.
