But, that our Saviour's new command
May every human heart pervade.

II.

For ever sheathe the reeking sword,
Bestow an universal peace;
Let tyranny, in all its forms,

And pride, and mad ambition, cease.

III.

Exert thy power, thy rights maintain,
Insulted everlasting king;

The influence of thy crown increase,
And strangers to thy footstool bring.

IV.

We long to see that happy time,
That dear, expected, blessed day,
When all the race of fallen man
The second Adam shall obey.

y.

Already Hope on tiptoe stands,
The wond'rous harbingers to view,
Contemplating, with awe profound,
Events astonishing and new.

VI.

Thy prophecies must be fulfill'd,
Though earth and hell should dare

oppose;

The stone cut from the mountain's side, Though unobserv'd, to empire grows.

VII.

Soon shall the mingled image fall,
(Brass, silver, iron, gold and, clay,)

And superstition's gloomy reign
To light and liberty give way.

VIII.

In one vast symphony of praise,
Gentile and Jew shall then unite;
And infidelity, asham'd,

Sink in th'abyss of endless night.

IX.

Afric's emancipated sons

Shall join with Europe's polish'd race, To celebrate, in different tongues, The glories of redeeming grace.

X.

From east to west, from south to north,
Immanuel's kingdom shall extend;
And every man, in every face,
Shall meet a brother and a friend.

HYMN LXXI. L. M.

God our refuge.

I.

EHOLD the judgments of the LORD!
With silent awe before him stand;

What desolations he hath made!

How great the vengeance of his hand !

II.

Be still, and know that he is GOD,

Nor doubt his sovereign power to save; He that bestows, can, when he please, Preserve the blessings which he gave.

III.

His foes may rage, and kingdoms shake,
The earth itself before him melt;
And heavier strokes his wrath display,
Than all the nations yet have felt.

IV.

No human strength nor wisdom can
One cheering ray of hope afford:
And only those are unappall'd,

Who lean securely on the LORD.

V.

To them the promise whispers peace,
On which they chearfully depend,
And through a rough and stormy way
Look forward to a joyful end.

VI.

In his foreseen appointed time,

He cools the warrior's hottest ire; He breaks the bow, and cleaves the spear, And burns the chariot in the fire.

VII.

Be still, and know that he is GOD,
The sovereign, universal king:
Exalt his name through all the earth,
And praises to his altar bring.

VIII.

Exulting cry, The LORD of hosts,
The GoD of Jacob is our aid,

Though seas may roar, and mountains quake,

Our souls shall never be afraid

Ix.

Invigorated by the stream

Which makes the heavenly city glad,
Our journey thither we pursue,
Our countenance no longer sad.

HYMN LXXII. L. M.

A Devout wish for the extension of the

Gospel.

I.

BEHOLD, assembled at thy feet

To plead thy promises of grace, Thy people, LORD, who trust thy word, And wait the smilings of thy face.

II.

'Midst the surrounding darkness, Faith
Descries a vista fair and bright:
Hear the united prayers that rise,
And change that faith to joyful sight.

III.

We consecrate these hours to thee,
Thy sovereign mercy to entreat;
And feel some animating hope,
We shall divine acceptance meet.

IV.

With deep humility we say,

We cannot, will not, let thee go; We cannot quit our suit, till thou Some token of success bestow.

V.

Hast thou not sworn to give thy Son
To be a light to Gentile lands;
To open the benighted eye,

And loose the wretched prisoner's bands?

VI.

Hast thou not said, from sea to sea
His vast dominion shall extend;
That every tongue shall call him LORD,
And every knee before him bend?

VII.

Is not the happy time arriv'd,

The time to favor Zion come? Wilt thou not send thine HERALDS forth, And call thy banish'd children home?

VIII.

To the high honor we aspire,

To share the triumphs of that day,
When JESUS, our exalted king,
Shall reign with universal sway.

HYMN LXXIII. S. M.
A Blessing on the Missionaries.

I.

E messengers of CHRIST,

YE

In his great name, we say Arise and follow where he leads, And peace attend your way.

II.

The master whom you serve

Will needful strength bestow,
