Blessed jubilee,

Let thy glorious morning dawn.

II.

Let the Indian, let the negro,
Let the rude Barbarian see,
That divine and glorious conquest,
Once obtain'd on calvary;

Let the Gospel

Loud resound from pole to pole.

III.

Kingdoms wide that sit in darkness,
Grant them, LORD, the glorious light,
And from eastern coast to western,
May the morning chase the night,
And redemption,

Freely purchas'd win the day.

IV.

May the glorious day approaching,
From eternal darkness dawn,
And the everlasting Gospel

Spread abroad thy holy name;
All the borders

Of the great IMMANUEL's land,

V.

Fly abroad, thou mighty Gospel,
Win and conquer, never cease;
May thy lasting wide dominions
Multiply and still increase;
Sway thy sceptre,

Saviour, all the world around.

HYMN CXVIII. L. M.

Life and Safety in Christ alone.

THOU

I.

HOU only sovereign of my heart,
My refuge, my almighty friend-
And can my soul from thee depart,
On whom alone my hopes depend?

II.

Whither, a whither shall I go,
A wretched wanderer from my LORD?
Can this dark world of sin and woe,
One glimpse of happiness afford?

III.

Eternal life, thy words impart,
On these my fainting spirit lives;
Here sweeter comforts cheer my heart,
Than all the round of nature gives.

IV.

'Let earth's alluring joys combine, While thou art near, in vain they call; One smile, one blissful smile of thine, My dearest LORD outweighs them all.

V.

Thy name my inmost powers adore, Thou art my life, my joy, my care: Depart from thee-'tis death,-'tis more, 'Tis endless ruin, deep despair.

VI.

Low at thy feet my soul would lie,
Here safety dwells, and peace divine;
Still let me live beneath thine eye,
For life, eternal life is thine.

HYMN. CXIX. L. M.

Christ Suffering and Reigning.

I.

NOW far above the starry skies,

Our JESUS fills his brighter throne,

Invisible to mortal eyes,

But not to humble faith unknown.

II.

[The countless hosts that round him stand,
The subjects of his sovereign power;
Fly thro' the world at his command,
Or prostrate at his feet adore.

III

Satan and all his rebel crew

That rag'd to pull his kingdom down;
Crush'd by his hand, in ruin now
Lie trembling at his awful frown.

IV.

His name above all creatures great,
He all sustains and all controuls;
Yet from his high exalted state,
Looks kindly down to humble souls.

V.

Tho' in the glories he possess'd,
Long ere this world, or time begun,
He shines the SON OF GOD confess'd,
Yet owns himself the SoN OF MAN.

VI.

Here once in agonies he dy'd,
Now in the heavens he ever lives;
Of joy there pours th' eternal tide,
Here saves the sinner who believes.

VII.

All hail! thou great IMMANUEL, hail!
Ten thousand blessings on thy name!
While thus thy wond'rous love we tell,
Our bosoms feel the sacred flame.

VIII.

Come, quickly come, immortal King!
On earth thy regal honours raise,
The full salvation promis'd, bring,
Then every tongue shall sing thy praise!

HYMN CXX. L. M.

Winter.

I.

EE how rude winter's icy hand,

[ocr errors]

Has strip'd the trees and seal'd the ground, But spring shall soon his rage withstand,

And spread new beauties all around.

II.

My soul a sharper winter mourns,
Barren and fruitless I remain;
When will the gentle spring return,
And bid my graces grow again?

III.

JESUS, my glorious sun, arise!

'Tis thine the frozen heart to move; O hush these storms, and clear my skies, And let me feel thy vital love!

IV.

Dear LORD, regard my feeble cry,
I faint and droop till thou appear;
Wilt thou permit thy plant to die;
Must it be winter all the year?

V.

Be still, my soul, and wait his hour, With humble prayer and patient faith; 'Till he reveals his gracious power, Repose on what his promise saith.

VI.

He, by whose all commanding word, Seasons their changing course maintain, In every change a pledge affords,

That none shall seek his face in vain.
