The Second Epistle of PAUL the Apostle to the CORINTHIANS.

VERY soon after the sending off of the first epistle, a popular uproar at Ephesus, directed against the apostle, rendered it expedient for him to leave that city. He accordingly retired to Troas, where he expected to meet Titus, whom he had despatched in the interval to Corinth, and from whom he hoped to receive tidings of the effect produced by his letter upon the church in that place. Disappointed in this expectation, he proceeded into Macedonia, and there at length Titus joined him. The intelligence brought by this missionary from Corinth was, upon the whole, of a satisfactory kind. Good had been effected by the apostle's reproofs and instructions; and the church had returned from its grosser delinquencies, and purged itself of many of the disorders by which it had been infested. Everything, however, was not as the apostle wished-the bad feeling towards himself in the minds of some in the church having rather increased, and shewn itself in still more direct attacks on his authority as an apostle.

This intelligence led Paul, under divine guidance, to compose this second epistle-the contents of which are in strict accordance with the circumstances by which it was occasioned. Whilst he commends them for the attention they had paid to his former injunctions, he strongly asserts and defends his claims as an apostle of Christ. At the same time he urges upon them the case of the poor saints in Judea, as demanding their liberal aid.

No doubts have ever been entertained as to the genuineness and authenticity of this epistle; and though some have suspected the integrity of some parts, it has been on grounds altogether imaginary, and which a careful reading of the epistle itself is quite sufficient to invalidate.

Tradition points out Philippi as the place where the Second Epistle to the Corinthians was written, and it is certain that it was sent from some place in Macedonia. As to the time, it was probably about the close of the year 57.
