COURTEOUS READER,

TF thou art acquainted with the divine life,

I need not inform thee, that although all the acts and exercises of devotion are feet and delightful; yet we never refemble the blessed worshippers above more than when we are joining together in public devotion, and with bearts and lips unfeigned finging praises to Him who fitteth upon the throne for ever. Confequently, Hymns composed for such a purpose ought to abound much in thanksgiving, and ta be of fuch a nature, that all who attend may join in them without being obliged to fing lies, or not fing at all.-Upon this plan the following Collection is founded. They are intended purely for focial worship, and fo altered in Some particulars, that I think all may fafely concur in ufing them. They are short, becaufe I think three or four ftanzas, with a doxology, are fufficient to be fung at one time. I am no great friend to long fermons, long prayers, or long hymns; they generally weary infead of edifying, and therefore, I think, Should be avoided by those who prefide in any public worshipping affembly. Befides, as the generality of those who receive the Gospel are commonly the poor of the flock, I have ftudied cheapness 39 x 688

as well as concifenefs. Much in a little is what
God gives us in his word; and the more we
imitate fuch a method in our public perform-
ances and devotions, the nearer we come up to
the pattern given us in the Mount. I think
myself juftifiable in publishing some Hymns by
way of dialogue, for the use of the Society,
becaufe fomething like it is practifed in our
cathedral churches; but much more fo, be-
caufe the celeftial choir is reprefented in the
book of the Revelations answering one another
in their heavenly anthems.
That we all may
be infpired and warmed with a like divine fire
while finging below, and be tranflated after
death to join with them in finging the Song of
Mofes and the Lamb above, is the earnest
prayer of,

Courteous Reader,

A DEBTOR to mercy alone
A good High Prieft is come
Ah! lovely appearance of death
Alas! and did our Saviour bleed
All glory to God, and peace upon
All hail the great Immanuel's naine
All-wife, all-good, almighty Lord
And are we wretches yet alive
Array'd in mortal flesh

Attend while God's eternal Son

Awake and fing the song
Awake our fouls, away our fears
Awake my heart, arise my tongue
Away from every mortal care
Away with our fears
