EDITOR'S EXPLANATION LITTLE apology is needed for having made the attempt to collect the sayings of Jesus, and to present them to the reader separately from the story of the life and deeds of their author. For, whilst the story of the life of Jesus is well known to most, yet-although Christianity is the nominal religion of so vast a number of the people of the West -very few have more than the slightest conception of his actual teaching. Fewer still, of course, are they who make any serious effort to carry into their lives the practical rules which that teaching implies.
