FOR A PERSON SUFFERING FROM SLEEPLESSNESS.

THOU, who keepest the night-watches of the world;

have compassion on this Thy servant, who seeks rest and cannot find it. Thou, the Unsleeping One, givest sleep to all Thy creatures. Wherefore we entreat Thee for Thy servant that he may rejoice in the sweet oblivion wherein Thy healing forces abide. Thou seest his sad state of body and of mind. When it is evening, he cries, “Would God it were morning!" and when the morning comes, he has no pleasure in it. Temper to him the hours of wakefulness by soothing memories and thoughts of dear ones, and thanksgivings for all the good things thou hast bestowed

upon him.

Let no Give him

May he feel his past, his present, and his future alike beset by Thy faithfulness which is good and Thy compassions that fail not. Let no worry harass his mind. fear disturb his heart. to feel that Thou canst transform the blunders of the vanished years and make them ministers of good. O divine and holy Peace! enter his soul that no shadows from out the past and no presentiments of ill in the future may frighten sleep away! But gently steep his senses in unconsciousness, and give him to know the blessedness of that ancient word, "He giveth His beloved sleep." And we will praise Thee now and ever through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FOR A PERSON SUFFERING FROM DEPRESSION

Be

GOD, Almighty and Allgood, have pity upon this Thy afflicted servant, who from the depths of sadness would lift a cry to Thee. Restore to him, we pray Thee, the joy of life. Thou the strength of his heart, the Light in his gloom, and the Lifter up of his head. Inspire him with new courage to throw off the thoughts that oppress; to bear with patience the trial of his faith. Grant him prudence and understanding that he may avoid those outward things that cast him down; and instead may cherish every good and hopeful inspiration and receive comfort from those who rejoice and are strong. Make him glad with the assurance that though

the night cometh, the morning cometh also. Let Thy blessing accompany the means appointed for his help. Deliver him out of prison that he may praise Thy name, through our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Amen.

IGHT of our light, eternal

Reason in whom our finite minds exist, and in whose creative powers they share; visit in mercy this Thy servant, who now stands under the shadow of a great calamity. We are mys

teries to ourselves and know not the secrets of our mental life; but Thou art acquainted with all our ways and understandest our thought afar off. The inmost ground of our being is well-known to Thee, for Thou dwellest in us, Soul of our souls. Through hidden and marvellous ways, known only to Thee, Thou canst bring help to the distracted spirit, unity and control to the disordered imagination. Pierce Thou the gloom
