FOR A PERSON SUFFERING FROM A SENSE OF LONELINESS

COMPANION of our souls!

Friend that sticketh closer

than a brother! Hear our prayers for this Thy servant, who feels lonely and forsaken, alone upon the wide sea of humanity. Thou hast made us, in the inmost ground of our being, with desires for fellowship, with a nature that is unfinished until it completes itself in union with others. Comfort Thy servant with a sense of Divine companionship. May he look up into Thy face and learn to say, "I am alone, yet not alone, for the Father is with me." Speak to him through other lives. Raise up to him friends and brothers, and draw his heart to them that the joy of comradeship may be his;

that never again may he be tempted to say within himself, "Who am I, that I should be remembered among so great a multitude?" May Thine ancient comfort sustain and strengthen him, "Though a woman may forget the son of her womb, yet will not I forget Thee." Answer this prayer for Christ's sake. Amen.

Free him from the dominion of these sad thoughts. Chase away the phantoms of a morbid imagination, by the health-giving beams of Thy light. Reveal to him the infinitude of Thy mercy, so that he may be well assured that there is no sin which Thou art not willing to forgive. May he rest in faith on Thine own word: "I have blotted out, as a thick cloud, Thy transgressions; return unto me, for I have redeemed thee." We pray that Thy blessing may

rest upon all the means that are being used for the restoration of Thy servant to peace of mind. Remove the causes, physical and mental, that make for his present misery. Let a spirit of right reason, of a patient trust, of unselfish labour, wean his thoughts from the tyranny of unwholesome and selfcentred brooding. And with a mind wholly possessed with a sense of Thy goodness, may he give thanks to Thee and praise Thy name evermore. Amen.

FOR A WOMAN BURDENED WITH DOMESTIC CARES

THOU who bearest the

burdens of Thy children, and faintest not, neither art weary; be present with thy strength and patience to this Thy servant, who, cumbered with much serving, is troubled about many things. Make clear her vision that she may behold the beauty of common things. Teach her that the ordinary task has power to draw her close to Thee. Take from her the spirit of discouragement and repining; of anxious brooding; of untrustful care. Comfort her with the assurance that not the least labour done for Thee is done in vain. Amid the petty cares and irritating concerns of her days, bring her into the secret place of
