FOR AN ABSENT FRIEND IN DAN

A

GER

LMIGHTY Father, in whom all our loved ones are worthier to be loved, we remember before Thee our dear friend now separated from us and exposed to many dangers, and it may be, called upon to undergo severe trials. In our weakness we take refuge in Thy strength; in our anxious thought we lift our hearts to Thy abiding peace. Let Thy fatherly hand be over our absent friend for good. We commend to Thy care his soul and life. Let the consciousness of Thy presence sustain him so that he may have calmness and courage amid tumult and alarm. However hard the duty or burdensome the task he may be called upon to fulfill let

not his heart faint nor fail, but girded by Thy might may he go forward unafraid because Thou art with him. Restore him to us in due season in health and wellbeing that we may rejoice in Thy goodness. Comfort us in our suspense, and inspire us with the faith of Thy perfect Son who asked only for the coming of Thy Kingdom and the doing of Thy will. Graciously hear this our prayer, through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

of all comfort, we come to Thee. Be with our brothers fighting on land or sea or in the air. Amid the terrors of the battle with its confused noise and garments rolled in blood, pour Thy strength and peace into their souls. May they fight with clean hands, and with hearts purged of all meanness and cruelty. and cruelty. Inspire them with courage and mercy whether in victory or defeat. Break the sword in the hand of him who wields it unrighteously; uphold the arm of him who smites for justice and freedom. Comfort the wounded and the sick; sustain a spirit of faith and endurance in those who are prisoners; grant for

giveness and hope to the dying and receive into Thy holy keeping the souls of all those who in their country's service have laid down their lives. We remember before

Thee those who are saved from wounds and death, and who are resting awhile ere another summons calls them forth to battle. Be present with Thy protecting grace to save them from the temptations which beset flesh and blood in moments of reaction. Cheer them in their loneliness and longing for home and kindred with the certainty of Thy constant presence, and may they know the inspiration and encouragement of that solemn word: "Thou God seest me." Hear these our prayers for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

to be a Father to the fatherless and a Husband to the widow, look in pity upon the hearts that mourn for those who will never return. Let Thy light shine through the darkness. Console them with the knowledge that they who have made the final sacrifice and have laid down their lives for others will hear Thy word of approval, "Well done, good and faithful servant." Sustain in every saddened spirit the fires of faith and courage. Help the sorrowing to rise above their grief and to breathe the air of that hope of immortality which Jesus Christ has brought to light through the Gospel. Grant to all who mourn for the
