But in thy life the law appears,
Drawn out in living characters.

2 Such was thy truth, and such thy zeal,
Such deference to thy Father's will,
Such love, and meekness so divine,

I would transcribe, and make them mine 3 Cold mountains and the midnight air Witnessed the fervour of thy prayer; The desert thy temptations knew, Thy conflict and thy victory too. 4 Be thou my pattern; make me bear More of thy gracious image here; Then God the Judge shall own my name, Among the followers of the Lamb.

GUID

8s 7s & 4s.

Christ our Guide.

UIDE me, O thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but thou art mighty,
Hold me with thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven,

Feed me, till I want no more.
2 Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing streams do flow;
Let the fiery, cloudy pillar

Lead me all my journey through;
Strong Deliverer,

Be thou still my strength and shield.
3 When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside:
Death of death, and hell's destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan's side;
Songs of praises

I will ever give to thee.

Christ the Shepherd.

ATHER of peace, and God of love,
We own thy power to save;

That power by which our Shepherd rose,
Victorious o'er the grave.

2 We triumph in that Shepherd's name, Still watchful for our good,

Who brought the eternal covenant down, And sealed it with his blood.

3 So may thy Spirit seal my soul,
And mould it to thy will;

That my fond heart no more may stray,
But keep thy covenant still.

4 Still may we gain superior strength,
And press with vigour on,
Till full perfection crown our hopes,
And fix us near thy throne.

Christ our Strength.

ET me but hear my Saviour say,
"Strength shall be equal to thy day;"

Then I rejoice in deep distress,
Leaning on all-sufficient grace.

2 I glory in infirmity,

That Christ's own power may rest on me;
When I am weak, then am I strong,
Grace is my shield, and Christ my song.

3 I can do all things, or can bear
All sufferings, if my Lord be there;
Sweet pleasures mingle with the pains,
While his own hand my head sustains.

Types and Prophecies fulfilled in Christ.
EHOLD the woman's promised Seed,
Behold the great Messiah come;
Behold the prophets all agreed,
To give Him the superior room.

2 Abraham, the saint, rejoiced of old,
When visions of the Lord he saw;
Moses, the man of God, foretold
This great Fulfiller of his law.

3 The types bore witness to his name,
Obtained their chief design, and ceased;
The incense and the bleeding lamb,
The ark, the altar, and the priest.
4 Predictions in abundance meet,
To join their blessings on his head;
Jesus, we worship at thy feet,
And nations own the promised Seed.

Christ our Example.

ND is the gospel peace and love?
So let our conversation be;

The serpent blended with the dove,
Wisdom and meek simplicity.

2 Whene'er the angry passions rise,

And tempt our thoughts or tongues to strife, On Jesus let us fix our eyes,

Bright Pattern of the Christian life.

3 O! how benevolent and kind!

How mild, how ready to forgive!
Be his the temper of our mind,
And his the rule by which we live

4 To do his heavenly Father's will, Was his employment and delight; Humility and holy zeal

Shone through his life divinely bright

5 Dispensing good where'er He came,
The labours of his life were love:
If then we love our Saviour's name,
Let his divine example move.

6 But ah! how blind, how weak we are,
How frail, how apt to turn aside;
Lord, we depend upon thy care,
And ask thy Spirit for our guide.

Christ the Hope of the disconsolate.

WHEN

HEN gathering clouds around I view,
And days are dark, and friends are few,

On Him I lean, who, not in vain,
Experienced every human pain;
He sees my wants, allays my fears,
And counts and treasures up my tears.
2 If ought should tempt my soul to stray,
From heavenly virtue's narrow way,
To fly the good I would pursue,
Or do the sin I would not do;

Still He who felt temptation's power,
Shall guard me in that dangerous hour.
3 When vexing thoughts within me rise,
And sore dismayed my spirit dies,
Yet He, who once vouchsafed to bear
The sickening anguish of despair,
Shall sweetly soothe, shall gently dry,
The throbbing heart, the streaming eye.
4 When, sorrowing, o'er some stone I bend,
Which covers all that was a friend,

And from his voice, his hand, his smile,
Divides me, for a little while,

Thou, Saviour, seest the tears I shed,
For thou didst weep o'er Lazarus dead
5 And O! when I have safely passed
Through every conflict but the last,
Still, still unchanging, watch beside
My painful bed, for thou hast died;
Then point to realms of cloudless day,
And wipe the latest tear away.

The Lord my Shepherd.

THE Lord my pasture shall prepare, And feed me with a shepherd's care, His presence shall my wants supply, And guard me with a watchful eye: My noon-day walks He shall attend, And all my midnight hours defend. 2 When on the sultry glebe I faint, Or on the thirsty mountain pant; To fertile vales and dewy meads, My weary, wandering steps He leads, Where peaceful rivers, soft and slow, Amid the verdant landscape flow. 3 Though in the paths of death I tread, With gloomy horrors overspread, My steadfast heart shall fear no ill, For thou, O Lord, art with me still; Thy friendly arm shall give me aid, And guide me through the dreadful shade. 4 Though in a bare and rugged way, Through devious, lonely wilds I stray, Thy bounty shall my pains beguile, The barren wilderness shall smile,
