THE

The perfect law of love.

HE thing my God doth hate,
That I no more may do,

Thy creature, Lord, again create,
And all my soul renew:

2 My soul shall then, like thine,
Abhor the thing unclean,
And, sanctified by love divine,
Forever cease from sin.

3 That blessed law of thine,
Jesus, to me impart;
The Spirit's law of life divine,
O write it on my heart!

4 Implant it deep within,
Whence it may ne'er remove,—
The law of liberty from sin,
The perfect law of love.

5 Thy nature be my law,-
Thy spotless sanctity;

And sweetly every moment draw
My happy soul to thee.

6 Soul of my soul, remain!
Who didst for all fulfil,
In me, O Lord, fulfil again
Thy heavenly Father's will.

574 For fervent zeal.
JESUS,

147-c.

ESUS, I fain would find Thy zeal for God in me; Thy yearning pity for mankind,Thy burning charity.

2 In me thy Spirit dwell;

In me thy bowels move;
So shall the fervour of my zeal
Be the pure flame of love.

BEHOLD the throne of grace;
The promise calls us near;
There Jesus shows a smiling face,
And waits to answer prayer.

2 Thine image, Lord, bestow,-
Thy presence and thy love,-
That we may serve thee here below,
And reign with thee above.
3 Teach us to live by faith,-

Conform our wills to thine; Let us victorious be in death, And then in glory shine. 4 If thou these blessings give, And thou our portion be, All worldly joys we'll gladly leave, To find our heaven in thee.

2 Thee while the first archangel sings,
He hides his face behind his wings:
And ranks of shining thrones around
Fall worshiping, and spread the ground.
3 Lord, what shall earth and ashes do?
We would adore our Maker too;
From sin and dust to thee we cry,
The Great, he Holy, and the High.

4 Earth, from afar, hath heard thy fame,
And worms have learn'd to lisp thy name;
But O! the glories of thy mind
Leave all our soaring thoughts behind.

5 God is in heaven, and men below:
Be short our tunes; our words be few:
A solemn rev'rence checks our songs,
And praise sits silent on our tongues.

999 Christ's universal and everlasting kingdom, 23-a. JESUS shall reign where'er the sun

Does his successive journeys run;
His kingdom spread from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more.
2 From north to south the princes meet,
To pay their homage at his feet;
While western empires own their Lord,
And savage tribes attend his word.

3 To him shall endless prayer be made,
And endless praises crown his head;
His name like sweet perfume shall rise
With every morning sacrifice.

4 People and realms of every tongue
Dwell on his love with sweetest song,

And infant voices shall proclaim Their early blessings on his Name.

ARM of the Lord, awake, awake!

26-a.

Thine own immortal strength put on! With terror clothed, hell's kingdom shake, And cast thy foes with fury down.

2 As in the ancient days appear!
(The sacred annals speak thy fame ;)
Be now omnipotently near,

To endless ages still the same.

3 By death and hell pursued in vain,
To thee the ransom'd seed shall come;
Shouting, their heavenly Zion gain,

And pass through death triumphant home.
4 The pain of life shall then be o'er,
The anguish and distracting care;
There sighing grief shall weep no more,
And sin shall never enter there.

PARADISE. L. M. (35)

her sov'reign Lord;

Rejoicing in the glory of His grace.

LORY to God, whose sov'reign grace Gnath nimated senseless stones,

Call'd us to stand before his face,

And raised us into Abrah'm's sons.

2 The people that in darkness lay,
In sin and error's deadly shade,
Have seen a glorious gospel-day
In Jesus' lovely face display'd.

3 Thou only, Lord, the work hast done, And bared thine arm in all our sight; Hast made the reprobates thine own,

And claim'd the outcasts as thy right.

4 Thy single arm, almighty Lord, To us the great salvation brought;

Supreme Divinity of Christ.

THE day of Christ, the day of God,
We humbly hope with joy to see,—
Wash'd in the sanctifying blood
Of an incarnate Deity--

2 Who did for us his life resign.
There is no other God but one;
For all the plenitude Divine
Resides in the eternal Son.

34-b

3 Spotless, sincere, without offence,
O may we to his day remain,
Who trust the blood of Christ to cleanse
Our souls from every sinful stain.

4 Lord, we believe the promise sure;
The purchased Comforter impart;
Apply thy blood to make us pure,--
To keep us pure in life and heart.

5 Then let us see that day supreme, When none thy Godhead shall deny,Thy sov'reign majesty blaspheme,

Ör count thee less than the Most High

6 When all who on their God believe,-
Who here thy last appearing love,-
Shall thy consummate joy receive,
And see thy glorious face above.

STILL, for thy loving-kindness, Lord, thy temple wait:

I look to find thee in thy word,
Or at thy table meet.

2 Here, in thine own appointed ways,
I wait to learn thy will:
Silent I stand before thy face,

And hear thee say,-Be still!

3 Be still! and know that I am God;'Tis all I live to know;

To feel the virtue of thy blood,

And spread its praise below.

4 I wait my vigour to renew,Thine image to retrieve;

The veil of outward things pass through, And gasp in thee to live.

1074 Victory over the fears of death. 115-b.

FOR an overcoming faith,
To cheer my dying hours,-
To triumph o'er approaching death,
And all his frightful powers.

2 Joyful, with all the strength I have,
My quiv'ring lips should sing,-
Where is thy boasted vict'ry, Grave?
And where, O Death, thy sting?
3 If sin be pardon'd, I'm secure;
Death has no sting beside:
The law gives sin its damning power,
But Christ, my ransom, died.

4 Now to the God of victory

Immortal thanks be paid,

Who makes us conqu'rors, while we die, Through Christ, our living Head.

MY

Recovery from sickness.

85-b.

Y God, thy service well demands
The remnant of my days;

Why was this fleeting breath renew'd,
But to renew thy praise?

2 Thine arms of everlasting love
Did this weak frame sustain,
When life was hov'ring o'er the grave,
And nature sank with pain.

3 I calmly bow'd my fainting head
Upon thy faithful breast,
And waited for my Father's call
To his eternal rest.

4 Into thy hands, my Saviour God,
Did I my soul resign,

In firm dependence on that truth
Which made salvation mine.

5 Back from the borders of the grave,
At thy command, I come;
Nor will I ask a speedier flight
To my celestial home.

6 Where thou appointest mine abode,
There would I choose to be;
For in thy presence death is life,

And earth is heaven with thee.

500 A perfect heart the Redeemer's throne. 78-d.

0

FOR a heart to praise my God,
A heart from sin set free;-
A heart that always feels thy blood,
So freely spilt for me:-

2 A heart resign'd, submissive, meek,
My great Redeemer's throne;
Where only Christ is heard to speak,-
Where Jesus reigns alone.

3 O for a lowly, contrite heart,
Believing, true, and clean;
Which neither life nor death can part,
From Him that dwells within:-
:-

4 A heart in every thought renew'd,
And full of love divine;
Perfect, and right, and pure, and good,
A copy, Lord, of thine.

5 Thy nature, gracious Lord, impart;
Come quickly from above;
Write thy new name upon my heart,—
Thy new, best name of Love.

[blocks in formation]

2 Saviour from sin, we thee receive,
From all indwelling sin;
Thy blood, we steadfastly believe,
Shall make us throughly clean.

3 Since thou wouldst have us free from sin, And pure as those above;

Make haste to bring thy nature in,

And perfect us in love.

4 The counsel of thy love fulfil;
Come quickly, gracious Lord!
Be it according to thy will,
According to thy word.

50 that the perfect grace were given, Thy love diffused abroad:

O that our hearts were all a heaven,
Forever fill'd with God.

THEE, Jesus, full of truth and grace,
Thee, Saviour, we adore;

Thee in affliction's furnace praise,
And magnify thy power.

2 Thy power, in human weakness shown, Shall make us all entire;

We now thy guardian presence own,
And walk, unburnt, in fire.

3 Thee, Son of man, by faith we see,
And glory in our Guide;
Surrounded and upheld by thee,
The fiery test abide.

4 The fire our graces shall refine,
Till, moulded from above,

We bear the character divine,—
The stamp of perfect love.

107-c.

The conquering love of Jesus. THAT I could my Lord receive, Who did the world redeem; Who gave his life that I might live

A life conceal'd in him.

2 O that I could the blessing prove,—
My heart's extreme desire;
Live happy in my Saviour's love,
And in his arms expire.

3 Mercy I ask to seal my peace,
That, kept by mercy's power,
I may from every evil cease,
And never grieve thee more.

4 Now, if thy gracious will it be,
E'en now my sins remove,
And set my soul at liberty
By thy victorious love.
