4 CHINA. C. M. (83) SWAN. 217 1. Why do we mourn for dying friends, Or shake at death's a- larms? 'Tis 1094 Certainty of the resurrection dispels the WHY gloom of the grave. HY do we mourn for dying friends, Or shake at death's alarms? "Tis but the voice that Jesus sends, To call them to his arms. 2 Are we not tending upward too, As fast as time can move? Nor should we wish the hours more slow, To keep us from our love. 3 Why should we tremble to convey Their bodies to the tomb? There once the flesh of Jesus lay, And left a long perfume. 4 The graves of all his saints he blest, 5 Thence he arose, ascending high, At the great rising day. 6 Then let the last, loud trumpet sound, And bid our kindred rise : Awake, ye nations under ground; Ye saints, ascend the skies. 3 Lo! from their seats the mountains leap; The mountains are not found; Transported far into the deep, 4 Who then shall live and face the throne, And see the Judge severe ? When heaven and earth are fled and gone, 5 Now, only now, against that hour 6 Firm in the all-destroying shock, VAIN man, thy fond pursuits forbear; Repent, thine end is nigh; Death, at the farthest, can't be far: 2 Reflect, thou hast a soul to save; 3 Death enters, and there's no defence; 4 Thy flesh (perhaps thy greatest care) Shall into dust consume; But, ah! destruction stops not there; 1044 Praise for protecting mercy. 2 The tempest heard his voice, 3 With joy we hail'd the shore, 4 Thus, while o'er seas we roam, 5 And when this life is past, 6 Then, as we join the bands We'll praise thee with uplifted hands, And sing thy power to save. 841 Now we see through a glass, darkly. 130-c. is in the sea; 2 Here the dark veils of sense 4 In part we know thy will, 5 With joy shall we survey REJOICE in Jesus' birth, To us a Son is given; To us a child is born on earth, Who made both earth and heaven. 2 He reigns above the sky, This universe sustains; The God supreme, the Lord most high, The king Messiah reigns. 3 The mighty God is He, Author of heavenly bliss; The Father of eternity, The glorious Prince of peace. 4 His government shall grow, From strength to strength proceed: His righteousness the church o'erflow, And all the earth o'erspread. 277 0 WHAT delight is this, Which now in Christ we know,An earnest of our glorious bliss, Our heaven begun below! 2 When He the table spreads, With rapture we lift up our heads, 3 The Lamb for sinners slain, 4 Let earth and heaven be join'd, 739 The universal victory of the cross. 135-a. JESU ESUS, the Conqu'ror, reigns, In glorious strength array'd; His kingdom over all maintains, And bids the earth be glad: Ye sons of men, rejoice In Jesus' mighty love; Lift up your heart, lift up your voice, 2 Extol his kingly power; Kiss the exalted Son, Who died, and lives to die no more, Our Advocate with God, He undertakes our cause, And spreads through all the earth abroad The vict'ry of his cross. The earth and heavens are full of thee, Thy light, thy power, thy full of thee, Thy light, thy power, thy maj es- ty. es- ty. light, thy power, thy majesty, Thy light, thy power, thy maj 2 Loud hallelujahs to thy Name, 840 Your life is hid with Christ in God. 26-a. In all his Father's majesty, And only live to love and praise. 5 For who by faith your Lord receive, Ye nothing seek or want beside; Dead to the world and sin ye live; Your creature-love is crucified. 6 Your real life, with Christ conceal'd, Deep in the Father's bosom lies; And glorious as your Head reveal'd, Ye soon shall meet him in the skies. Secure in his omnipo-tence, What foe can make our souls a fraid? 389 Seeking deliverance and rest. 39-a. AWAKED from sin's delusive sleep, Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates; 2 Loose all your bars of massy light, And wide unfold the' ethereal scene; He claims these mansions as his right; Receive the King of glory in! Who is the King of glory? Who? The Lord, that all our foes o'ercame ;The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew; And Jesus is the Conqu'ror's name. 3 Lo! his triumphal chariot waits, The Lord, of glorious power possess'd;- Y soul, through my Redeemer's care, 2 Wherefore to him my feet shall run; |
