THE Lord our God is clothed with might,
The winds obey his will;

He speaks, and in his heavenly height
The rolling sun stands still.

2 Rebel, ye waves, and o'er the land
With threat'ning aspect roar;
The Lord uplifts his awful hand,
And chains you to the shore.

3 Ye winds of night, your force combine; Without his high behest,

Ye shall not, in the mountain-pine,
Disturb the sparrow's nest.

4 His voice sublime is heard afar;
In distant peals it dies;

He yokes the whirlwind to his car,
And sweeps the howling skies.

5 Ye sons of earth, in rev'rence bend;
Ye nations, wait his nod;

And let unceasing praise ascend
In honour of our God.

4 Led by the light thy grace imparts,
Ne'er may we bow the knee
To idols, which our wayward hearts
Set up instead of thee.

5 So shall thy choicest gifts, O Lord, Thy faithful people bless;

For them shall earth its stores afford, And heaven its happiness.

986 The earth renewed in righteousness. 89-a.

A

LMIGHTY Spirit, now behold A world by sin destroy'd: Creating Spirit, as of old,

Move on the formless void.

2 Give thou the word; that healing sound
Shall quell the deadly strife;
And earth again, like Éden crown'd,
Bring forth the tree of life.

3 If sang the morning stars for joy,
When nature rose to view,

What strains will angel-harps employ,
When thou shalt all renew!

4 And if the sons of God rejoice

To hear a Saviour's name,

How will the ransom'd raise their voice,
To whom the Saviour came!

5 Lo, every kindred, every tribe,
Assembling round the throne,
The new creation shall ascribe
To sov'reign love alone.

Teach me

D. C.

some melo-dious son - net, Sung by flam-ing tongues a- bove:

901

Hitherto hath the Lord helped us.

COME, thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart to sing thy grace; Streams of mercy, never ceasing,

Call for songs of loudest praise. Teach me some melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above: Praise the mount-I'm fix'd upon it; Mount of thy redeeming love!

2 Here I'll raise mine Ebenezer;
Hither by thy help I'm come;
And I hope, by thy good pleasure,
Safely to arrive at home.
Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand'ring from the fold of God;
He, to rescue me from danger,
Interposed his precious blood.
8 0 to grace how great a debtor
Daily I'm constrain'd to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,

Bind my wand'ring heart to thee: Prone to wander, Lord, I feel itProne to leave the God I love; Here's my heart, O take and seal it; Seal it for thy courts above.

2 Heavenly Guide from paths of error,
Comforter of minds distress'd,-
When the billows fill with terror,
Pointing to an ark of rest:
Promised Pledge! eternal Spirit!
Greater than all gifts below,-
May our hearts thy grace inherit;
May our lips thy glories show.

238 The Church: God her everlasting light.

HEAR

AR what God the Lord hath spoken: O my people, faint and few, Comfortless, afflicted, broken,

Fair abodes I build for you:
Scenes of heartfelt tribulation
Shall no more perplex your ways;
You shall name your walls salvation,
And your gates shall all be praise.

2 Ye, no more your suns descending,
Waning moons no more shall see:
But, your griefs forever ending,

Find eternal noon in me:
God shall rise, and, shining o'er you,
Change to day the gloom of night;
He, the Lord, shall be your glory-
God your everlasting light.

279 The Lord's Supper: The Spirit's influences. COME, thou everlasting Spirit,

Bring to every thankful mind
All the Saviour's dying merit,
All his suff'rings for mankind:
True recorder of his passion,
Now the living faith impart;
Now reveal his great salvation
Unto every faithful heart.

2 Come, thou Witness of his dying;
Come, Remembrancer divine;
Let us feel thy power applying
Christ to every soul, and mine;
Let us groan thine inward groaning;
Look on Him we pierced, and grieve:
All partake the grace atoning,--
All the sprinkled blood receive.

2 See, the streams of living waters,
Springing from eternal love,
Still supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove :
Who can faint while such a river

Ever flows our thirst to' assuage? Grace, which, like the Lord, the giver, Never fails from age to age.

3 Round each habitation hov'ring, See the cloud and fire appear! For a glory and a cov'ring,

Showing that the Lord is near. He who gives us daily manna,

He who listens when we cry, Let him hear the loud Hosanna Rising to his throne on high.

The universal bond of love.

THE glorious universe around,

HYMNS.

The heavens with all their train, Sun, moon, and stars, are firmly bound In one mysterious chain.

2 The earth, the ocean, and the sky,
To form one world agree;
Where all that walk, or swim, or fly,
Compose one family.

3 God in creation thus displays
His wisdom and his might,
While all his works with all his ways
Harmoniously unite.

4 In one fraternal bond of love,
One fellowship of mind,

The saints below and saints above
Their bliss and glory find.

5 Here, in their house of pilgrimage,
Thy statutes are their song;
There, through one bright, eternal age,
Thy praises they prolong.

6 Lord, may our union form a part
Of that thrice happy whole;
Derive its pulse from thee, the heart,
Its life from thee, the soul.

[blocks in formation]

2 Behold this fair and fertile globe, By him in wisdom plann'd; 'Twas he who girded, like a robe, The ocean round the land.

241

3 Lift to the arch of heaven your eye;
Thither his path pursue;

His glory, boundless as the sky,
O'erwhelms the wond'ring view.

4 How excellent, O Lord, thy name,
In all creation's lines:

Spread through eternity, thy fame
With rising lustre shines.

5 These lower works that swell thy praise,
High as our thoughts can tower,
Are but a portion of thy ways,-
The hiding of thy power.

6 Millions before thy presence stand,
Who feel, while they adore,
Fullness of joy at thy right hand,
And pleasures evermore.

To God all things are possible. 116-b.

THAT thou wouldst the heavens rend,
In majesty come down,—

Stretch out thine arm omnipotent,

And seize me for thine own.

2 Descend, and let thy lightnings burn
The stubble of thy foe;

My sins o'erturn, o'erturn, o'erturn,
And make the mountains flow.

3 Thou my impetuous spirit guide,
And curb my headstrong will;
Thou only canst drive back the tide,
And bid the sun stand still.

4 What though I cannot break my chain, Or e'er throw off my load;

The things impossible to men,

244

Are possible to God.

We will rejoice and be glad in it. 116-c.

To earth, rejoice and sing;

HIS is the day the Lord hath made:

Let songs of triumph hail the morn;
Hosanna to our King!

2 The Stone the builders set at naught, That Stone has now become

The sure foundation, and the strength Of Zion's heavenly dome.

3 Christ is that stone, rejected once,
And number'd with the slain;

Now raised in glory o'er his Church
Eternally to reign.

4 This is the day the Lord hath made;
O earth, rejoice and sing:
With songs of triumph hail the morn;
Hosanna to our King!
