Cries,-Ye will not happy be; No, ye will not come to

me,

D. C.

[blocks in formation]

SINNERS, turn, while God is near;

not think him insincere:
Now, e'en now, your Saviour stands;
All day long he spreads his hands;
Cries,-Ye will not happy be;
No, ye will not come to me,-
Me, who life to none deny:
Why will ye resolve to die?

2 Turn, he cries, ye sinners, turn:
By his life, your God hath sworn;
He would have you turn and live;
He would all the world receive.
If your death were his delight,
Would he you to life invite?
Would he ask, beseech, and cry,—
Why will ye resolve to die?

3 What could your Redeemer do,
More than he hath done for you?
To procure your peace with God,
Could he more than shed his blood?
After all his flow of love,-
All his drawings from above,-
Why will ye your Lord deny?
Why will ye resolve to die?"

Purer praise we hope to bring,
When around thy throne we sing.
3 While on earth ordain'd to stay,
Guide our footsteps in thy way,
Till we come to dwell with thee,
Till we all thy glory see.

4 Then, with angel-harps again,
We will wake a nobler strain;
There, in joyful songs of praise,
Our triumphant voices raise.

1003 The Watchman's report. WATCHMAN, tell us of the night, What its signs of promise are. Trav❜ler, o'er yon mountain's height See the glory-beaming star. Watchman, does its beauteous ray Aught of hope or joy foretell? Trav'ler, yes, it brings the dayPromised day of Israel.

2 Watchman, tell us of the night; Higher yet that star ascends. Trav'ler, blessedness and light,

171-a.

Peace and truth, its course portends. Watchman, will its beams, alone,

Gild the spot that gave them birth? Trav'ler, ages are its own;

See, it bursts o'er all the earth.

3 Watchman, tell us of the night, For the morning seems to dawn. Trav'ler, darkness takes its flight;

Doubt and terror are withdrawn. Watchman, let thy wand'ring cease, Hie thee to thy quiet home. Trav'ler, lo! the Prince of Peace, Lo the Son of God is come.

40 God's glorious perfections celebrated. 181-b.

LORY be to God on high,
UT God, whose glory fills the sky;
Peace on earth to man forgiven,
Man, the well-beloved of Heaven.
2 Sov'reign Father, heavenly King,
Thee we now presume to sing;
Glad thine attributes confess,
Glorious all, and numberless.
3 Hail, by all thy works adored!
Hail, the everlasting Lord!
Thee with thankful hearts we prove,
God of power, and God of love.

4 Christ our Lord and God we own,
Christ, the Father's only Son;
Lamb of God for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending man.

5 Jesus, in thy name we pray,
Take, O take our sins away;
Bow thine ear, in mercy bow,
Hear, the world's atonement, Thou!
6 Hear, for thou, O Christ, alone,
Art with thy great Father one;
One the Holy Ghost with thee;
One supreme eternal Three.

62-a.

For constant devotedness.
ORD, fill me with an humble fear;
My utter helplessness reveal;
Satan and sin are always near,-
Thee may I always nearer feel.

2 O that to thee my constant mind
Might with an even flame aspire;
Pride in its earliest motions find,

And mark the risings of desire.
3 O that my tender soul might fly
The first abhorr'd approach of ill;
Quick as the apple of an eye,

The slightest touch of sin to feel.
4 Till thou anew my soul create,
Still may I strive, and watch, and pray;
Humbly and confidently wait,

And long to see the perfect day.

817 Living to serve the cause of Christ. 71-a.

MY gracious Lord, I own thy right
To every service I can pay,
And call it my supreme delight
To hear thy dictates and obey.

2 What is my being but for thee,-
Its sure support, its noblest end?
'Tis my delight thy face to see,

And serve the cause of such a Friend.
3 I would not sigh for worldly joy,
Or to increase my worldly good;
Nor future days nor powers employ
To spread a sounding name abroad.
4 'Tis to my Saviour I would live,-
To him who for my ransom died;
Nor could all worldly honour give

Such bliss as crowns me at his side. 5 His work my hoary age shall bless, When youthful vigour is no more;

And my last hour of life confess
His saving love, his glorious power.

32-b.

The all-sufficient Portion. LOVE, thy sov'reign aid impart, And guard the gift thyself hast given: My portion, thou, my treasure art, My life, and happiness, and heaven.

2 Would ought on earth my wishes share? Though dear as life the idol be, The idol from my breast I'll tear, Resolved to seek my all in thee. 3 Whate'er I fondly counted mine, To thee, my Lord, I here restore; Gladly I all to thee resign;

Give me thyself, I ask no more.

Souls perishing for lack of knowledge.
HEPHERD of souls, with pitying eye
The thousands of our Israel see;

To thee in their behalf we cry,-
Ourselves but newly found in thee.

2 See where o'er desert wastes they err,
And neither food nor feeder have,
Nor fold, nor place of refuge near,

For no man cares their souls to save.
3 Thy people, Lord, are sold for naught,
Nor know they their Redeemer nigh;
They perish, whom thyself hast bought;
Their souls for lack of knowledge die.
4 The pit its mouth hath open'd wide,
To swallow up its careless prey:
Why should they die, when thou hast died-
Hast died to bear their sins away?
5 Why should the foe thy purchase seize?
Remember, Lord, thy dying groans:
The meed of all thy suff'rings these;
O claim them for thy ransom'd ones!

[blocks in formation]

2 A broken heart, my God, my King, Is all the sacrifice I bring;

Thou God of grace, wilt thou despise A broken heart for sacrifice?

3 My soul lies humbled in the dust, And owns the dreadful sentence just: Look down, O Lord, with pitying eye, And save a soul condemn'd to die.

1066 A peaceful death expected, and

SHRI

prayed for.

53-a.

HRINKING from the cold hand of death, I soon shall gather up my feet; Shall soon resign this fleeting breath, And die,-my fathers' God to meet. 2 Number'd among thy people, I

Expect with joy thy face to see: Because thou didst for sinners die, Jesus, in death remember me! 3 O that, without a ling'ring groan, I may the welcome word receive; My body with my charge lay down, And cease at once to work and live. 4 Walk with me through the dreadful shade, And, certified that thou art mine,

My spirit, calm and undismay'd,

I shall into thy hands resign.

5 No anxious doubt, no guilty gloom,
Shall damp whom Jesus' presence cheers:
My Light, my Life, my God is come,
And glory in his face appears.

Man frail-God eternal.

GOD, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come,
Our shelter from the stormy blast,
And our eternal home :-

2 Under the shadow of thy throne
Still may we dwell secure;
Sufficient is thine arm alone,
And our defence is sure.

3 Before the hills in order stood,
Or earth received her frame,
From everlasting thou art God,
To endless years the same.

4 A thousand ages, in thy sight,
Are like an evening gone;

Short as the watch that ends the night, Before the rising sun.

5 Time, like an ever-rolling stream,

Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

6 The busy tribes of flesh and blood,
With all their cares and fears,
Are carried downward by the flood,
And lost in foll'wing years.

7 O God, our help in ages past,
Our hope for years to come;

Be thou our guide while life shall last, And our perpetual home!

[blocks in formation]

2 Believing on my Lord, I find
A sure and present aid:
On thee alone my constant mind
Be every moment stay'd.

3 Whate'er in me seems wise, or good, Or strong, I here disclaim:

I wash my garments in the blood
Of the atoning Lamb.

4 Jesus, my strength, my life, my rest,On thee will I depend,

Till summon'd to the marriage-feast,
When faith in sight shall end.

[blocks in formation]

HEPHERD Divine, our wants relieve In this our evil day; To all thy tempted foll❜wers give

The power to watch and pray.

2 Long as our fiery trials last,—
Long as the cross we bear,-
O let our souls on thee be cast
In never ceasing prayer.

3 Till thou thy perfect love impart ;
Till thou myself bestow,
Be this the cry of every heart,—
I will not let thee go;-

4 I will not let thee go, unless
Thou tell thy name to me;
With all thy great salvation bless,
And make me all like thee.

5 Then let me on the mountain-top
Behold thy open face;
Where faith in sight is swallow'd up,
And prayer in endless praise.
