WHEN

[blocks in formation]

710

HEN I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.
2 Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ, my God;
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.

3 See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down:
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

4 Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

From everlasting to everlasting.
ARE mountains rear'd their forms sublime,

Before the birth of ancient time,
From everlasting thou art God.
2 A thousand ages, in their flight,
With thee are as a fleeting day;
Past, present, future, to thy sight

At once their various scenes display. 3 But our brief life's a shadowy dream, A passing thought, that soon is o'er,That fades with morning's earliest beam, And fills the musing mind no more. 4 To us, O Lord, the wisdom give,

Each passing moment so to spend, That we at length with thee may live Where life and bliss shall never end.

54-6.

The heavenly Guest invited. AVIOUR of all, to thee we bow, And own thee faithful to thy word, We hear thy voice, and open now

Our hearts to entertain our Lord.

2 Come in, come in, thou heavenly Guest; Delight in what thyself hast given; On thy own gifts and graces feast,

And make the contrite heart thy heaven. 3 Smell the sweet odour of our prayers; Our sacrifice of praise approve; And treasure up our gracious tears, Who rest in thy redeeming love.

4 Beneath thy shadow let us sit;

Call us thy friends, and love, and bride; And bid us freely drink and eat

Thy dainties, and be satisfied.

[blocks in formation]

COME, O thou greater than our heart,

And make thy faithful mercies known; The mind which was in thee impart: Thy constant mind in us be shown. 2 O let us by thy cross abide, Thee, only thee, resolved to know, The Lamb for sinners crucified,

A world to save from endless wo.

3 Take us into thy people's rest,

And we from our own works shall cease; With thy meek Spirit arm our breast, And keep our minds in perfect peace. 4 Jesus, for this we calmly wait; O let our eyes behold thee near! Hasten to make our heaven complete; Appear, our glorious God, appear!

YOST.

O Lord, thy yoke to wear, De-light-ing in thy perfect will;

Each other's burdens learn to bear, And thus thy law of love fulfil.

1035 More blessed to give than to receive.

HEL

ELP us, O Lord, thy yoke to wear,
Delighting in thy perfect will;
Each other's burdens learn to bear,
And thus thy law of love fulfil.
2 He that hath pity on the poor,
Lendeth his substance to the Lord;
And, lo! his recompense is sure,

For more than all shall be restored.

3 Teach us, with glad, ungrudging heart, As thou hast blest our various store, From our abundance to impart

A lib'ral portion to the poor.

4 To thee our all devoted be,

In whom we breathe, and move, and live; Freely we have received from thee;

Freely may we rejoice to give.

5 And while we thus obey thy word,
And every call of want relieve,
O! may we find it, gracious Lord!
More blest to give than to receive.

[blocks in formation]

Does not the promise still remain,
That none shall seek thy face in vain?

4 Poor I may be-despised, forgot,
Yet God, my God, forgets me not;
And he is safe, and must succeed,
For whom the Saviour deigns to plead.

God, the nation's guardian.
REAT God! beneath whose piercing eye
The earth's extended kingdoms lie;
Whose fav'ring smile upholds them all,
Whose anger smites them, and they fall;-
2 We bow before thy heavenly throne;
Thy power we see-thy greatness own;
Yet, cherish'd by thy milder voice,
Our bosoms tremble and rejoice.

3 Thy kindness to our fathers shown
Their children's children long shall own;
To thee, with grateful hearts, shall raise
The tribute of exulting praise.

4 Led on by thine unerring aid,
Secure the paths of life we tread;
And, freely as the vital air,

Thy first and noblest bounties share.

5 Great God, our guardian, guide, and friend!
O still thy shelt'ring arm extend;
Preserved by thee for ages past,
For ages let thy kindness last!

OLMSTED. C. M. (75)

W.

1. Praise ye the Lord, ye' immortal choirs That fill the worlds above; That fill the worlds, etc.

Praise him who formed you of his fires, And feeds you with his love, And feeds you, etc.

111 God worthy of ceaseless praise from all his

creatures.

PRAISE ye the Lord, ye' immortal choirs

That fill the worlds above;

Praise him who form'd you of his fires,
And feeds you with his love.

2 Shine to his praise, ye crystal skies,
The floor of his abode;

Or veil in shades your thousand eyes
Before your brighter God.

3 Thou restless globe of golden light,
Whose beams create our days,
Join with the silver queen of night,
To own your borrow'd rays.

4 Thunder and hail, and fire and storms,
The troops of his command,
Appear in all your dreadful forms,
And speak his awful hand.

5 Shout to the Lord, ye surging seas,
In your eternal roar;

Let wave to wave resound his praise,
And shore reply to shore.

6 Thus while the meaner creatures sing,
Ye mortals, catch the sound;
Echo the glories of your King
Through all the nations round.

[blocks in formation]

3 Lord! everlasting thanks be thine
For such a bright display,
As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.
4 Our souls rejoicingly pursue
The steps of Him we love,
Till glory break upon our view
In brighter worlds above.

ET every tongue thy goodness speak,
Thou sov'reign Lord of all;

Thy strength'ning hands uphold the weak,
And raise the poor that fall.

2 When sorrows bow the spirit down,
When virtue lies distress'd,

Beneath the proud oppressor's frown,
Thou giv'st the mourner rest.

3 Thou know'st the pains thy servants feel, Thou hear'st thy children's cry;

And their best wishes to fulfil,

Thy grace is ever nigh

4 Thy mercy never shall remove

From men of heart sincere:

Thou sav'st the souls whose humble love

Is join'd with holy fear.

5 My lips shall dwell upon thy praise,

And spread thy fame abroad;

Let all the sons of Adam raise

The honours of their God.

Lord, help my unbelief.

HOW
OW sad our state by nature is;
Our sin, how deep it stains;
And Satan binds our captive souls
Fast in his slavish chains.

2 But there's a voice of sov'reign grace
Sounds from the sacred word:-
Ho! ye despairing sinners, come,
And trust a faithful Lord.

3 My soul obeys the gracious call,
And runs to this relief;

I would believe thy promise, Lord;
O help my unbelief!

4 To the blest fountain of thy blood,
Incarnate God, I fly;

Here let me wash my guilty soul
From crimes of deepest dye.

5 A guilty, weak, and helpless worm,
Into thine arms 1 fall;

Be thou my strength and righteousness,— My Jesus, and my all.

[blocks in formation]

4 But now, when evening shade prevails, My soul in darkness mourns;

And when the morn the light reveals,
No light to me returns.

5 Rise, Lord, and help me to prevail;
O make my soul thy care;

I know thy mercy cannot fail ;-
Let me that mercy share.

68 Heaven and earth are full of His glory. 82-b.

ETEL

TERNAL Wisdom! thee we praise,
Thee the creation sings:

With thy loved name, rocks, hills, and seas,
And heaven's high palace, rings.

2 Thy hand, how wide it spreads the sky, How glorious to behold!

Tinged with a blue of heavenly dye,
And starr'd with sparkling gold.

3 There thou hast bid the globes of light Their endless circuits run:

There the pale planet rules the night;
The day obeys the sun.

4 Thy glories blaze all nature round,
And strike the wond'ring sight,
Through skies, and seas, and solid ground,
With terror and delight.

5 Infinite strength, and equal skill,
Shine through thy works abroad:
Our souls with vast amazement fill,
And speak the builder God!

6 But the mild glories of thy grace,
Our softer passions move:
Pity divine, in Jesus' face,
We see, adore, and love.

[blocks in formation]

LORD, and is thine anger gone,

And art thou pacified? After all that I have done, Dost thou no longer chide? Let thy love my heart constrain, And all my restless passions sway: Keep me, lest I turn again

Out of the narrow way.

2 To the cross, thine altar, bind Me with the cords of love; Freedom never let me find

From thee, my Lord, to move: That I never, never more

May with my much-loved Master part, To the posts of mercy's door, O nail my willing heart!

3 See my utter helplessness,
And leave me not alone;
O preserve in perfect peace,

And seal me for thine own:
More and more thyself reveal,
Thy presence let me always find;
Comfort, and confirm, and heal
My feeble, sin-sick mind.

4 As the apple of thine eye,
Thy weakest servant keep;
Help me at thy feet to lie,

And there forever weep:
Tears of joy mine eyes o'erflow,
That I have any hope of heaven;
Much of love I ought to know,
For I have much forgiven.

543

EVER

Speak the word.

VER fainting with desire, For thee, O Christ, I call; Thee I restlessly require;

I want my God, my all. Jesus, dear redeeming Lord,

204-a.

I wait thy coming from above;
Help me, Saviour, speak the word,
And perfect me in love.

2 Wilt thou suffer me to go
Lamenting all my days?
Shall I never, never know
Thy sanctifying grace?
Wilt thou not thy light afford?

The darkness from my soul remove?
Help me, Saviour, speak the word,
And perfect me in love.

3 Thou my life, my treasure be,
My portion here below:
Nothing would I seek but thee,—
Thee only would I know;

My exceeding great reward,

My heaven on earth, my heaven above:
Help me, Saviour, speak the word,
And perfect me in love.

4 Grant me now the bliss to feel
Of those that are in thee:
Son of God, thyself reveal;
Engrave thy Name on me.

As in heaven, be here adored,

And let me now the promise prove; Help me, Saviour, speak the word, And perfect me in love.
