CHAPTER I. 1-6.

Paul and Timotheus, the servants of Jesus Christ, to all the

saints in Christ Jesus which are at Philippi, with the bishops and deacons : Grace be unto you, and peace, from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ. I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, Always in every prayer of mine for you all making request with joy, For your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now; Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you, will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ.

WHEN the Apostle began the composition of this letter to the believers of Philippi, he was under the influence of that most affecting recollection, that he had been the instrument, under Providence, of their conversion “from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God.” While St. Paul was at Troas, he beheld in the night, as we are informed in the sixteenth chapter of the Acts, the vision of a man of Macedonia ; who, in a supplicating voice, cried, “Come over into Macedonia, and help us.” The summons was immediately obeyed; the gospel was proclaimed, in all its grace and fulness, to the inhabitants of that unenlightened region; and among those who, at Philippi, were brought to a knowledge
