W. CROSWELL.

1195 Who went about doing good.—Acts x. 38.

[merged small][ocr errors]

By street and lane obscure,

went,

And let love's treasures still be spent,
Like His upon the poor;

Like Him, through scenes of deep distress,
Who bore the world's sad weight,
We in their crowded loneliness,

Would seek the desolate.

2 For Thou hast placed us side by side,
In this wide world of ill,

And that Thy followers may be tried,
The poor are with us still.

Mean are all offerings we can make,
But Thou hast taught us, Lord,
If given for the Saviour's sake,
They lose not their reward.

Matthew xi. 5.

[ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors]

And, of all pleasant things bereft,

Dwelt here on earth alone;

2 Dwelt Man with men, that He might teach
How we may best endure,

And King of kings, vouchsafed to preach
His Gospel to the poor;

3 Pour down upon us from above
The Spirit which He sends,
That we, made like to Him in love,
May bless the poor, His friends.

4 O, fill us, Lord of might divine,
With loving charity;

All things which we possess are Thine,

expectation of the poor shall not perish for
ever.-Ps. ix. 18.

HRIST, incarnate in His poor,
Oft in deep dejection

CH

Stands unnoticed at the door,
Trying our affection :

O, we think, what costly love,
Were He here, we'd show Him,
Yet neglectful of Him prove,
For we do not know Him.

2 When the sick prefer their prayer,
O, what wretched blindness,
Not to see the Saviour there,
Asking us for kindness:
Not to hear His voice intreat,
Pleading pain or danger,
Not to see Him in the street,
Naked or a stranger.

3 Let the rich His love declare,
Since He stoops to need them;
Let the poor their sorrows bear
Gently, since He'll plead them.
Ever more His praise shall be
Offered deep and endless;
The poor commits himself to Thee,
Thou Helper of the friendless.

Go and do thou likewise.-Luke x. 37.

ATHER of mercies! send Thy grace
All powerful from above,

To form in our obedient souls
The image of Thy love.

2 O may our sympathizing breast
That generous pleasure know,
Freely to share in others' joy,
And weep for others' woe.

3 Whene'er the helpless sons of grief
In low distress are laid,

Soft be our hearts their pains to feel,
And swift our hands to aid.

4 Since Christ, to save our guilty souls,
On wings of mercy flew,

We, whom the Saviour thus hath loved,
Should love each other too.

1199 Luke, the beloved physician.—Col. iv. 14

GOD! most mighty, listen now
While we with eamest prayer

All those who heal throughout our land
Commend to Thy good care.

2 Keep them from pestilence by night,
From sickness at noonday,

Though thousands by their side may fall
Drive noisome things away.

3 And make them hallowed means of good,
In all they think and do,
While truthful to their healing art,
Not unto Thee less true.

4 Physicians of the body they-
By grace's soft control,

May they become, like good St. Luke,
Physicians of the soul!

1200 Will God in very deed dwell with men on

the earth ?-2 Chron. vi. 18.

HIS stone to Thee in faith we lay :

TH

We build the temple, Lord, to Thee:
Thine eye be open night and day,

To guard this house and sanctuary.

2 Here, when Thy people seek Thy face,
And dying sinners pray to live ;

Hear Thou, in heaven, Thy dwelling-place,
And, when Thou hearest, O forgive!

3 Here, when Thy messengers proclaim
The blessed gospel of Thy Son,
Still, by the power of His great Name,
Be mighty signs and wonders done.
4 Hosanna to their heavenly King!

When children's voices raise that song,
Hosanna let their angels sing,

And heaven with earth the strain prolong.

5 But will, indeed, Jehovah deign

Here to abide-no transient guest?
Here will the world's Redeemer reign?
And here the Holy Spirit rest?

6 That glory never hence depart!

Yet choose not, Lord, this house alone;
Thy kingdom come to every heart;
In every bosom fix Thy throne.

1201 The hour cometh, when ye shall neither in

this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, wor-
ship the Father.-John iv. 21.

HE ground on which this day we stand,
Holy henceforth shall be,

[ocr errors]

For thus, Lord God of sea and land,

Thine own we render Thee.

2 Maker and Builder Thou, of all
Around us and above,

On Thine Almighty Name we call
To crown our work of love.

3 An earthly temple to Thy praise,
Our labouring hands would pile;
Do Thou a better temple raise
Within its walls, the while.

4 Of living stones that temple frame,
Founded on Christ alone,
Inscribed with His exalted Name,
By all men read and known.

5 From thence, as time and tide roll by,
May ransomed souls ascend,

Safe in their Father's home on high,
Eternity to spend.

LATIN HYMN, tr. J. CHANDLER.

Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner

stone.-Ep. ii. 20.

HRIST is our corner-stone,

Con Him alone we build

With His true saints alone

The courts of heaven are filled :

On His great love

Our hopes we place

Of present grace,
