1 FORWARD! be our watch word, Steps and voices joined;

Seek the things before us,
Not a look behind:

Burns the fiery pillar

At our army's head;
Who shall dream of shrinking,
By our Captain led?
Forward through the desert,
Through the toil and fight:
Jordan flows before us,

Zion beams with light!
2 Forward! flock of Jesus,
Salt of all the earth,
Till each yearning purpose
Spring to glorious birth:
Sick, they ask for healing;
Blind, they grope for day;
Pour upon the nations

Wisdom's loving ray.
Forward, out of error,

Leave behind the night;

Forward through the darkness,
Forward into light!

Though all earth and hell appear, Who will doubt, or who can fear? God, our strength and shield, is near. We cannot lose our cause.

4 Onward, then, ye hosts of God! Jesus points the victor's rod; Follow where your Leader trod;

You soon shall see his face. Soon, your enemies all slain, Crowns of glory you shall gain, Soon you'll join that glorious train Who shout their Saviour's praise. Jared B. Waterbury.

lead, Till every foe is vanquished And Christ is Lord in-deed.

Stand up for Jesus.

2 Stand up, stand up for Jesus,
The trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict,

In this his glorious day:
"Ye that are men, now serve him,"
Against unnumbered foes;
Your courage rise with danger,
And strength to strength oppose.

3 Stand up, stand up for Jesus, Stand in his strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you;

Ye dare not trust your own: Put on the gospel armor, Each piece put on with prayer; Where duty calls, or danger, Be never wanting there.

4 Stand up, stand up for Jesus, The strife will not be long; This day the noise of battle,

The next the victor's song: To him that overcometh,

A crown of life shall be; He with the King of glory Shall reign eternally.

568 Enduring hardness as good soldiers.

1 Go forward, Christian soldier,
Beneath His banner true :
The Lord himself, thy Leader,
Shall all thy foes subdue.
His love foretells thy trials,

He knows thine hourly need;
He can, with bread of heaven,
Thy fainting spirit feed.

2 Go forward, Christian soldier,
Fear not the secret foe;
Far more are o'er thee watching
Than human eyes can know.
Trust only Christ, thy Captain,

Cease not to watch and pray;
Heed not the treacherous voices,
That lure thy soul astray.

3 Go forward, Christian soldier,
Nor dream of peaceful rest,
Till Satan's host is vanquished,
And heaven is all possessed;
Till Christ himself shall call thee
To lay thine armor by,
And wear, in endless glory,

The crown of victory.

Battle-hymn of the Reformation.

2 Fear not, be strong! your cause belongs
To him who can avenge your wrongs;
Leave all to him, your Lord:
Though hidden yet from mortal eyes,
Salvation shall for you arise;

He girdeth on his sword!

3 As true as God's own promise stands, Not earth nor hell, with all their bands, Against us shall prevail;

The Lord shall mock them from his throne; God is with us; we are his own;

Our victory cannot fail!

4 Amen, Lord Jesus, grant our prayer!
Great Captain, now thine arm make hare,
Thy Church with strength defend;
So shall thy saints and martyrs raise
A joyful chorus to thy praise,
Through ages without end.

Gustavus Adolphus, in prose. Jacob Fabricius.
Tr. by Miss C. Winkworth.

570 Looking unto Jesus.

1 ARE there not in the laborer's day
Twelve hours, in which he safely may
His calling's work pursue?
Though sin and Satan still are near,
Nor sin nor Satan can I fear,
With Jesus in my view.

REV. ROBERT LOWEY.

1. One more day's work for Jesus, One less of life for me! But heaven is nearer, And Christ is dearer

9:23 520

IT

CHORUS.

Than yester-day, to me; His love and light Fill all my soul to night. One more day's work for

Jesus, One more day's work for Jesus, One more day's work for Jesus, One less of life for me!

572 One more day's work for Jesus.

1 ONE more day's work for Jesus,
One less of life for me!

But heaven is nearer,
And Christ is dearer
Than yesterday, to me;
His love and light

Fill all my soul to-night.

One more day's work for Jesus, etc.
2 One more day's work for Jesus!
How sweet the work has been,
To tell the story,
To show the glory,

Where Christ's flock enter in!
How it did shine

In this poor heart of mine!
One more day's work for Jesus!
O yes, a weary day;

But heaven shines clearer
And rest comes nearer,
At each step of the way;
And Christ in all,
Before his face I fall.

4 O blessed work for Jesus!
O rest at Jesus' feet!

There toil seems pleasure,
My wants are treasure,
And pain for him is sweet.
Lord, if I may,

I'll serve another day!

Anna B. Warner.
