9 Juda is my law-giver, Moab is my wash-pot: over Edom will I caft out my fhoe; upon Philiftia will I triumph.

10 Who will lead me into the strong city: and who will bring me into Edom?

II Haft not thou forfaken us, O God and wilt not thou, O God, go forth with our hofts?

12 O help us against the enemy: for vain is the help of

man.

13 Through God we fhall do great acts: and it is he that fhall tread down our enemies.

HOLD

Pfalm cix. Deus laudum.

OLD not thy tongue, O God of my praise for the mouth of the ungodly, yea, the mouth of the deceitful is opened upon me.

2 And they have spoken against me with false tongues: they compaffed me about alfo with words of hatred, and fought against me without a cause.

3 For the love that I had unto them, lo, they take now my contrary part: but I give myself unto prayer.

4 Thus have they rewarded me evil for good: and hatred for my good will.

5 Set thou an ungodly man to be ruler over him : and let Satan ftand at his right hand.

6 When fentence is given upon him, let him be condemned and let his prayer be turned into fin.

7 Let his days be few: and let another take his office. 8 Let his children be fatherlefs and his wife a widow. 9 Let his children be vagabonds, and beg their bread : let them feek it also out of defolate places.

PRACTICAL

OBSERVATION S.

Pfalm cviii.] 1. This pfalm fhould infpire us with great devotion and ardent zeal to praise God, and to celebrate his mercy and truth. 2. It fhould fill the faints with a firm trust in the divine affistance, and convince them that thofe whom God loves will always be delivered, 3. David teaches us, that all our ftrength and all our happiness depends on God; that human affiftance is but vanity; and that therefore we ought to fix our hope in God alone.

to Let the extortioner confume all that he hath: and let the ftranger spoil his labour.

11 Let there be no man to pity him: nor to have compaffion upon his fatherless children.

12 Let his pofterity be deftroyed and in the next generation let his name be clean put out.

13 Let the wickedness of his fathers be had in remembrance in the fight of the Lord and let not the fin of his mother be done away.

14 Let them alway be before the Lord: that he may root out the memorial of them from of the earth;

17 He clothed himself with curfing like as with a raiment and it fhall come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones.

18 Let it be unto him as the clóke that he hath upon him and as the girdle that he is alway girded withal.

19 Let it thus happen from the Lord unto mine enemies : and to those that speak evil against my foul.

24 I became alfo a reproach unto them: they that looked upon me shaked their heads.

28 Let mine adverfaries be clothed with fhame: and let them cover themselves with their own confufion, as with a cloke.

29 As for me, I will give great thanks unto the Lord with my mouth and praife him among the multitude. 30 For 'he fhall ftand at the right hand of the poor: to fave his foul from unrighteous judges."

MORNING PRAYER..

Pfalm cx.

Dixit Dominus.

HE Lord faid unto my Lord: Sit thou on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

2 The Lord fhall fend the rod of thy power out of Sion: be thou ruler, even in the midst among thine enemies.

3 In the day of thy power fhall the people offer thee freewill-offerings with an holy worship: the dew of thy birth is of the womb of the morning.

4 The Lord fware, and will not repent: Thou art a Prieft for ever after the order of Melchifedech.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS. Pfalm cix.] We may learn in general from this pfalm, that as God protects good men, his curfe does ufually purfue the wicked, and even cleaves to their pofterity; and that the evil which they have done or wifhed to others, often falls upon themfelves. But care must be taken not to pervert this pfalm, by imagining we are at any time allowed to with that the vengeance of God may fall upon thofe who hate us and do us hurt. David here fpeaks in quality of a king chofen by God, and of a prophet. He rather foretold than defired the deftruction of his enemies ; he even returned them good for evil, as he himself fays, and love for hatred. Befides, what is here faid regards only the enemies of God, and certain great finners, fuch as Judas, to whom fome of the words of this pfalm are applied in the New Teftament. But above all, let us remember, that a Christian should hate no man; and that the character we bear as difciples of Jefus Chrift, obliges us to love all men, even our greatest enemies, to pray for them with all our heart, and to wifh and do to them all the good in our power.

5 The Lord upon thy right hand: fhall wound even kings in the day of his wrath.

6 He fhall judge among the heathen; he fhall fill the places with the dead bodies and fmite in funder the heads over divers countries,

7 He shall drink of the brook in the way: therefore shall he lift up his head.

Pfalm cxi. Confitebor tibi.

Will give thanks unto the Lord with my whole heart: fecretly among the faithful, and in the congregation. 2 The works of the Lord are great fought out of all them that have pleasure therein.

3 His work is worthy to be praised and had in honour : and his righteousness endureth for ever.

4 The merciful and gracious Lord hath fo done his marvellous works: that they ought to be had in remembrance.

5 He hath given meat unto them that fear him: he fhall ever be mindful of his covenant.

6 He hath fhewed his people the power of his works: that he may give them the heritage of the heathen.

7 The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are true.

PRACTICAL

OBSERVATIONS.

Pfalm cx.] Jefus Chrift himself and the apofties, teach us in the New Teftament, that this pfalm relates to the Meffiah. We bere learn the divine dignity of his perfon; the nature of his kingdom, which was to be fpiritual and heavenly; the fupreme glory to which God would exalt him, by letting him at his right hand; and the power by which he would eftablish his empire, by the destruction of his enemies. The holy Spirit here likewife foretels, that the Meffiah fhould be not only a powerful king, but alfo our high priest, who fhould atone for our fins; as St Paul proves, Heb. vii. This pfalm teaches us further, that thofe who are the fubjects of this glorious King, should be a willing people, and that they would fubmit without reftraint, willingly and joyfully obeying him. Lastly, What is here faid fuffers us not to doubt but Jefus Chrift will for ever reign over the faithful, and that he will one day tread under his feet all his and our enemies; which will be efpecially accomplished when he fhall deftroy death, our laft enemy, by a happy refurrection, as St Paul remarks, 1 Cor. xv.

5 A good man is merciful, and lendeth: and will guide his words with difcretion.

10 The ungodly fhall fee it, and it fhall grieve him; he fhall gnath with his teeth, and confume away, the defire of the ungodly fhall perish.

PRACTICAL OBSERVATIONS.

Pfalm cxi.] We ought to join our praises to those which are offered to God in this fong: we have even more reafon than the faithful of old had, to confefs that the works of God are great and wonderful; that he is merciful, righteous, and full of compaffion; that he has remembered his covenant, and fent falvation and redemption to his people.
