also for Sanctus No. 560, and anthems Nos. 2, 3, 11, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20, 23 and 24, and for permission to print the words, &c., of some others. Sir Herbert S. Oakeley, M.A., Mus. Doc., for "Abends " and " Edina." Arthur Patton, Esq., for "Grace" and "Vigil." The Representatives of the late S. S. Wesley, Mus. Doc., for "Aurelia," "Harewood," and "Wimbledon." Thomas Simpson, Esq., for "Salvator," from the "Burnley Tune Book.' Sir Robert P. Stewart, Mus. Doc., for "St. Helen's," ""St. Werburgh " (No. 247, 2nd Tune), and " Vespers.' E. H. Thorne, Esq., for "Holy Sepulchre." Charles Vincent, Esq., Mus. Bac., for "Immanuel's Land" and "St. Jude." The music of CHURCH PRAISE has been carefully selected, due regard having been paid to the suitability of each tune to the words of the hymn with which it is associated. The fixed tune system has been adopted throughout the entire work, a system which has not only received the sanction of the highest authorities on church music, but has proved most beneficial in practice. In a number of cases alternative tunes have been given, in order that old associations may not be rudely severed, and yet diversities of taste be satisfied. Great care has been taken to secure that the music, while being thoroughly congregational, shall at the same time be stately and solemn in character, befitting the praises of the House of God. Some few tunes appear which, though possessing little musical excel. lence, it has been deemed expedient to reprint on account of the hallowed memories which they recall. The compilers have benefited greatly, in the course of their labours, by the ripe experience and well-known musical ability of Edward J. Hopkins, Esq., Mus. Doc., Organist to the Honourable Societies of the Inner and Middle Temple, who has been ever ready, and that most cordially, to assist when desired. While he is not responsible for all the selections made, he has expressed his entire satisfaction with this department of the work. The harmonies have, in all cases, passed under his critical eye, and been revised wherever necessary, while some tunes have been entirely re-harmonized by him. The compilers have further to thank Dr. Hopkins for composing the tunes "Tarring" and "Alexa" for the present work, and for most generously placing at their service his tunes and arrangements in the "Temple Choral Service Book," of which they have availed themselves very freely. All copyright tunes, of which there are very many, appear as harmonized by their composers. The Compilers are also indebted to the Rev. Professor A. B. Bruce, D.D., Glasgow, for kindly permitting the use of copyright arrangements from the "Free Church Hymn Book," and for other valued assistance. Expression marks have been placed at the hymns, with great care and good taste, by the Convener, the Rev. W. Rigby Murray, Manchester, and it is hoped that, by careful attention to these, a more appropriate rendering of the service of praise will be secured. To the Ancient Hymns and Canticles it has been deemed sufficient to set chant music only, leaving choirs and congregations to choose such choral settings as are best suited to their requirements, and which are easily procurable at small cost. The Anthems, also, appear in vocal score only (chiefly for want of space), but instrumental accompaniments for these, as well as the music for Nos. 27 to 69, can readily be obtained when desired. Every effort has been made to obtain permission for the use of the copyright tunes printed in this collection from their composers or proprietors, and to acknowledge the same. If, however, the compilers have failed to do so in any case, they trust to be pardoned for what is an involuntary infringement of copyright, and which, if pointed out to them, they will most gladly rectify in future editions. In conclusion, special thanks are due, and are hereby cordially offered, to the members of the sub-committee on music, and especially to Alex. Guthrie, Esq., Liverpool, for valuable assistance in the selection of tunes; and to A. Croil Falconer, Esq., London, for his unwearied and quite exceptional labours as Vice-Convener of that committee, for his assistance in superintending the press, and particularly for his valuable Index of Tunes.
