VENI CREATOR (ATTWOOD) (2nd Tune). P.M. THOMAS ATTWOOD.

[graphic]

mf COME, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, 5mf Anoint and cheer our soiled face And lighten with celestial fire.

Thou the anointing Spirit art,
Who dost Thy sevenfold gifts impart.
cresThy blessed unction from above
Is comfort, life, and fire of love.

mf Enable with perpetual light
The dulness of our blinded sight.

With the abundance of Thy grace.
6cres Keep far our foes; give peace at home:
Where Thou art Guide no ill can come.
7 mf Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And Thee, of both, to be but One;
8 f That, through the ages all along,
This may be our endless song:

9ff" Praise to Thy eternal merit !
Father, Son, and Holy Spirit." Amen.

* These ties and the small notes in last bar to be used in Ninth Stanza only.

The last syllable of the words "Merit" and "Spirit" to be sung to these minims. In the case of the first Tune Two Stanzas are required to each Verse, and in the Second

Tune, Three.

143

"The entrance of Thy words giveth light."

ImfTHE Spirit breathes upon the Word, cres His truths upon the nations rise;

And brings the truth to sight;
Precepts and promises afford
A sanctifying light.

2 mf A glory gilds the sacred page,
Majestic, like the sun;

It gives a light to every age,
It gives, but borrows none.

They rise, but never set.

4 f Let everlasting thanks be Thine,
For such a bright display

As makes a world of darkness shine
With beams of heavenly day.
5mf My soul rejoices to pursue
The steps of Him I love,

3mfThe hand, that gave it, still supplies cres Till glory breaks upon my view

The gracious light and heat:

In brighter worlds above. Amen.

[blocks in formation]

ImfGRACIOUS Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would gracious be;
And, with words that help and heal,
Would Thy life in mine reveal;
cres And, with actions bold and meek,
Would for Christ, my Saviour, speak.
2mfTruthful Spirit, dwell with me!

I myself would truthful be;
And, with wisdom kind and clear,
Let Thy life in mine appear;
And, with actions brotherly,
Speak my Lord's sincerity.

3 Tender Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would tender be;
Shut my heart up like a flower,

In temptation's darksome hour; cres Open it when shines the sun,

And His love by fragrance own.
4mf Mighty Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would mighty be;
Mighty, so as to prevail
Where unaided man must fail;
cres Ever, by a mighty hope,

Pressing on and bearing up.
5 Holy Spirit, dwell with me!
I myself would holy be;

cres Separate from sin, I would

Choose and cherish all things good; mf And, whatever I can be,

Give to Him who gave me Thee!

ST. MICHAEL.

S.M.

DAY'S PSALTER, 1563.

146

"If I depart, I will send Him unto you."

OUR blest Redeemer, ere He 4 breathed

His tender, last farewell,

A Guide, a Comforter bequeathed
With us to dwell.

2 f He came in tongues of living flame,
To teach, convince, subdue;
All-powerful as the wind He came,

As viewless too.

And His that gentle voice we hear,
Soft as the breath of even,

That checks each fault, that calms
each fear,

pp And speaks of heaven.

5cresAnd every virtue we possess,
And every victory won,
And every thought of holiness,
mf Are His alone.

3mf He came sweet influence to impart, 6 p Spirit of purity and grace,

A gracious, willing Guest,

Our weakness, pitying, see: [place,

While He can find one humble heart cres Oh, make our hearts Thy dwellingdim And worthier Thee! Amen.

Wherein to rest.
