Amen.

203

(See also "Day of Rest," No. 302.)

"This is the rest wherewith ye may cause the weary to rest."

ImfO DAY of rest and gladness!
O day of joy and light!
O balm of care and sadness,
Most beautiful, most bright!
cres On thee, the high and lowly
Before the eternal throne
f Sing, "Holy, holy, holy!"

To the great Three in One. amfOn thee, at the creation,

The light first had its birth,
On thee, for our salvation,
Christ rose from depths of earth;
cres On thee, our Lord victorious

The Spirit sent from heaven;
And thus on thee most glorious
A triple light was given.

3 Thou art a cooling fountain

In life's dry dreary sand;

cres From thee, like Pisgah's mountain, We view our promised land;

A day of sweet refection Thou art, a day of love. cres A day of resurrection

From earth to things above.
4mfTo-day on weary nations

The heavenly manna falls;
To holy convocations
cres The silver trumpet calls,
Where Gospel-light is glowing
With pure and radiant beams
And living water flowing

With soul refreshing streams,
5mf New graces ever gaining

From this our day of rest,
We reach the rest remaining
To spirits of the blest.
cres To Holy Ghost be praises,
To Father and to Son;
f The Church her voice upraises
To Thee, blest Three in One.
Amen.

2mf How sweetly rest Thy saints above, 5mfI bless Thy wise and wondrous love,

Who in Thy bosom lie!

The Church below doth rest in hope

Of that felicity.

Which binds us to be free;
Which makes us leave our earthly

That we may come to Thee. [snares

3mfThou, Lord, who daily feed'st Thy 6mfI come, I wait, I hear, I pray ; Mak'st them a weekly feast ; [sheep,

Thy footsteps, Lord, I trace:

Thy flocks meet in their several folds cres I sing to think this is the way
Upon this day of rest.
Unto my Saviour's face! Amen.

205 ImfLORD of the Sabbath, hear our vows On this Thy day, in this Thy house; And own, as grateful sacrifice, The songs which from the desert rise. 2 mf Thine earthly Sabbaths, Lord, we love; cres But there's a nobler rest above;

"There remaineth, therefore, a rest to the people of God."

To that our labouring souls aspire With ardent pangs of strong desire. 3mf No more fatigue, no more distress; Nor sin nor hell shall reach the place;

ST. JOHN.

No groans to mingle with the songs Which warble from immortal tongues; 4mf No rude alarms of raging foes;

No cares to break the long repose; No midnight shade, no clouded sun, cres But sacred, high, eternal noon. 5mf O long-expected day, begin!

Dawn on these realms of woe and sin!

dim Fain would we leave this weary road, And sleep in death, to rest with God.

6,6,6,6,8,8.

Amen.

207 "Every morning to thank and praise the Lord, and likewise at even." [EVENING.]

ImfTHE day Thou gavest, Lord, is ended;

The darkness falls at Thy behest; cres To Thee our morning hymns ascended, Thy praise shall hallow now our rest.

2mf We thank Thee that Thy Church unsleeping,

While earth rolls onward into light, Through all the world her watch is keeping,

And rests not now by day or night,

3 mf As o'er each continent and island The dawn leads on another day,

ST. GEORGE.

The voice of prayer is never silent, cres Nor dies the strain of praise away.

4mfThe sun, that bids us rest, is waking

Our brethren 'neath the western sky, And hour by hour fresh lips are making Thy wondrous doings heard on high.

never,

5 f So be it, Lord! Thy throne shall [away; Like earth's proud empires, pass cres But stand, and rule, and grow for ever, Till all Thy creatures own Thy sway.

Amen.
